HELLBOY

On December 23, 1944, a small red demon like creature appeared in a ball of flames at a ruined church in East Bromwich, England. British and American soldiers, as well as renowned British Medium Lady Cynthia Eden-Jones and occult scholars Malcolm Frost and Trevor Bruttenholm, witnessed the event. The creature’s appearance coincided exactly with the conclusion of Rasputin’s Ragna Rok project, a N**i-sponsored attempt to release the Ogdru Jahad from their prison in the Abyss. Sensing that there was more to the creature than its demonic appearance suggested, Trevor Bruttenholm named it Hellboy, and when the Americans took Hellboy to a New Mexico air force base for further study, Bruttenholm accompanied him. With the support of the United States government, Bruttenholm founded the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to investigate occult activities, particularly those related to the N***s and the Ragna Rok project. At the same time, Bruttenholm continued to work closely with Hellboy, for whom he quickly developed a great deal of affection; in 1946, Bruttenholm officially adopted the two-year-old Hellboy.

ABE SAPIEN

In November 1978, workmen at St. Trinian’s Hospital in Washington D.C. discovered a hidden basement containing an amphibious man in a glass tube. The creature was brought to the Connecticut headquarters of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, where scientists named him based on the one clue found in that
basement—a scrap of paper bearing the words Icthyo Sapien, and the date President Lincoln was shot: April 14, 1865. With no memory of a previous life, Abe Sapien awoke on March 2, 1979, when Hellboy saved him from dissection by curious Bureau scientists. Abe became friends with teenaged Liz Sherman and with Hellboy, who convinced Director Trevor Bruttenholm to let the fish-man come on minor field operations in an unofficial capacity.

HELLBOY in Anung Un Rama

A well-meaning half-Demon (or Cambion) whose true name is Anung Un Rama ("and upon his brow is set a crown of flame"), Hellboy was summoned from Hell to Earth as a baby by N**i occultists (spawning his hatred for the Third Reich). He was discovered on a fictional Outer Hebrides Island by the Allied Forces; amongst them, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who formed the United States Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.). In time, Hellboy grew to be a large, red-skinned adult with a tail, horns (which he files off, leaving behind circular stumps on his forehead), cloven hooves for feet, and an oversized right hand made of stone (the "Right Hand of Doom"). He has been described as smelling of dry-roasted peanuts. Although a bit gruff, he shows none of the malevolence thought to be intrinsic to classical demons and has an ironic sense of humor. This is said to be because of his upbringing under Professor Bruttenholm, who raised him as a normal boy.

LOBSTER JOHNSON

The Lobster was a vigilante who worked in secret in New York City during the 1930s. He had a reputation for violence, such as killing mobsters and burning his trademark lobster claw symbol into their foreheads. In modern times, the general public believes the Lobster (popularly known as "Lobster Johnson") is only a fictional character created by a retired detective turned pulp author. A few conspiracy theorists correctly believe the Lobster was real, though he was never referred to as "Lobster Johnson" in his own time.
He first appeared in the backup story Lobster Johnson: The Killer in My Skull that accompanied Hellboy: Box Full of Evil #1.

LIZ SHERMAN

Born in Kansas City, Kansas, on April 15, 1962, Liz had a normal childhood until her pyro kinetic abilities began to manifest themselves when she was ten. Raised Catholic, Liz felt that the fires were a result of her sins, and for a short time managed to keep the fires under control by a combination of prayer and sheer force of will. In July 1973, Liz was at a neighborhood birthday party, a boy pulled hard on her ponytails, surprising the young girl. In the ensuing fire, an entire city block was destroyed. Thirty-two people were killed in the flames, including Liz's entire family and home. And finally she was rescinded custody to the B.P.R.D. in May 1974. Hellboy helped Liz to come out of her
and adjust to life at the Bureau. In 1980 when Liz reached legal adulthood, she decided to remain with the Bureau and became a full field agent.
