GCP Kenya made the news! A huge thank you to Carter Sand for representing SU & his home country with such grace & respect.

“It’s very important for us to learn about cultures and people who are different from us,” he said. “At the end of the day we realise that we are much more similar than we think.”

Sand said taking part in the Iftar had been a memorable experience and a highlight of their visit to Kenya. “We’re grateful to the community of Mombasa for welcoming us and allowing us to be part of this celebration. It’s something we will always remember,” he said.

GCP Kenya was the last group to depart their host country & will be the last to arrive back in Virginia. They are set to touch down at IAD this afternoon at 4:35PM ET, although the crazy weather we're experiencing may cause that to change. But, fear not! Nothing can rain too hard on their parade. They had an amazing final few days in Kenya & are bringing the warm African sun back with them!

Final activities included a visit to the primary school that their host, Dr Nzai, attended as a kid (Mwarakaya Primary School in Mbuyuni). They planted mango and orange trees there. They also visited Moving the Goalpost, a girls soccer & academic program focused on female empowerment and education around reproductive health & financial independence. They broke fast in Mombasa & celebrated Iftar with the Muslim community for the Friday Night Mombasa Street Iftar. And, they rode camels at Mtwapa Beach. The whole crew even got matching Kenyan rugby kits to wear around campus!!

Its safe to say that our GCP program this year was a powerful success, partially because of the amazing people who participated. Our hearts are full as we celebrate the students, faculty, staff, and host communities that have made this program so special.

Team Ghana had an eventful few days to wrap up their adventure together. They attended a lecture on the history of music in Ghana & tried out some moves on a night out in Sakumono. Then, they visited Makola Market, a renowned marketplace and shopping district in central Accra. On their last day, they checked out Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & spent some time shopping and eating at Accra Mall before heading to the airport. They have been in the air since & touched down at IAD this morning at 6AM.

The team in St Lucia landed back in the US safely in the wee hours of the morning this morning (12:23 AM landing time). I'm sure they're catching up on rest on this grey Monday in Virginia. Especially after a few action packed final days! The group visited a hospital, took a St Lucian cooking class, and attended a workshop on the carnival (where their made traditional costumes out of leaves). Then, to wrap up their trip, they did some yoga/meditation and visited Splash Island Water Park, where they showed off some tricks.

GCP Hong Kong has also made it back to the US safe and sound! They landed yesterday at 12:35 PM. As promised on Friday, here's a photo dump from their adventures. Highlights from this batch include group photos as they explored Hong Kong & ShenZhen, robotics & animation activities at Laihua, group shots at Nantou & Dongmen Old Street, selfies near the Big Buddha, some delicious looking meals, and more. Can't wait to hear more stories from their trip as they get back into EST Mode.

Happy Monday ya'll!! As promised, here are a few more photos from the remaining activities in Slovakia. The group took a day trip to Modra, where they attended a pottery painting workshop & toured Majolika Modra (a renowned producer of traditional, hand-painted ceramics established in 1883). They returned to Bratislava therafter & prepared for the long journey home. They arrived home safely last night at 8:15 PM ET.

Finally, we have some updates from GCP Kenya.

On a serious note, the Kenya Group visited the Shimoni caves - a site that witnessed horrific acts under Imperial Colonialism. The Shimoni caves were used as holding areas for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Africans, shipped from the East African coast into slavery. While the tour weighed heavily on the hearts of our group & their hosts, we know its important to remember the darker parts of our collective history & hold space to discuss them, remember them, and grieve them together. It was a privilege to be shown the caves & hear the perspectives shared by the Shimoni elders & the National Museums of Kenya.

We also must move forward, with gratitude & hope. After the tour, the group sought peace and restoration under the big skies at the beach in Diani. They have since departed Diani for Mombasa, where they will remain for the rest of their trip.

And there is more to do ahead! Before they return to the States, they have more plans in Mombasa, including a visit to Mtwapa Beach, a visit to a Youth Empowerment Organization called Swahilipot, and tours of Fort Jesus, Old Town, and Jumba la Mtwana Ruins. I will share pics from the remainder of their trip when I return to campus on Monday.

GCP China has been limited with their standard tech stack since they crossed into ShenZhen, as they are now in Chinese airspace. They are still fully plugged in, but they are now using apps like WeChat & other China-specific systems to communicate with one another & navigate the city. That said, I was able to pull a few photos over from instagram about their activities & will share more pics (without captions!) once our standard channels are restored.

ShenZhen and Hong Kong are super interconnected, so there are moments when they can have one foot in BOTH cities (and countries!!). To many travelers, it can feel like the cities are one!

The group's agenda today included a visit to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange & a tour of Laihua, a major technology & animation company (look at that little robot friend for Buzzy!). They also visited Dongmen Old Street & a had a delicious final meal together.

Before they head to the airport, they'll visit the Nantou Ancient City - which started developing almost 1,700 years ago, during the Jin Dynasty. There, they'll learn more about the history and development of the metropolis we know today as modern Hong Kong.
