Introducing the essential foundation of the 🇫🇮 Kaohsiung Finland International School mission .
The 🇫🇮 Finnish education system is internationally respected not only for its academic excellence, but also for its strong emphasis on developing responsible, ethical, and socially aware citizens. In Finland, education is viewed as a holistic process that nurtures the intellectual, emotional, moral, and social growth of every student. Two essential pillars of this philosophy are moral ethics and media literacy.
✅ Moral Ethics in 🇫🇮 Finnish Education
In Finnish schools, moral ethics are integrated into everyday learning and school culture rather than taught only as a separate subject. Students are encouraged to develop honesty, empathy, fairness, responsibility, and respect for others. Teachers guide students to think critically about their actions and understand the consequences their behavior may have on individuals and society.
🇫🇮 Finnish education also promotes equality and inclusion. Every child is considered valuable, regardless of background, language, ability, or social status. Through collaborative learning and open discussion, students learn to appreciate diversity and practice democratic values from a young age.
This ethical foundation helps students become compassionate individuals who contribute positively to society. Finland believes that true education is not only about academic success, but also about building good character and social responsibility.
✅ Media Literacy in 🇫🇮 Finnish Education
In today’s digital world, media literacy has become one of the most important competencies for young people. Finland is recognized as one of the world leaders in media literacy education. Finnish schools teach students how to analyze, evaluate, and responsibly use information from digital platforms, social media, television, newspapers, and other forms of media.
Students learn how to identify misinformation, recognize bias, and distinguish reliable sources from false or manipulative content. They are encouraged to think independently and critically rather than simply accepting information at face value.
Media literacy education in
🇫🇮 Finland also teaches digital responsibility and online ethics. Students learn about respectful online communication, privacy protection, cyber safety, and the social impact of digital behavior.
By equipping students with strong media literacy skills, Finland prepares young people to become informed citizens capable of participating responsibly in a modern democratic society.
📣 The 🇫🇮 Finnish education system demonstrates that academic achievement alone is not enough for future success. Moral ethics and media literacy are essential for building thoughtful, responsible, and globally aware individuals. By combining ethical education with critical media understanding, Finland prepares students not only for examinations or careers, but also for meaningful participation in society and lifelong learning.
📣 The 🇫🇮 Kaohsiung Finland International School will be launched on September 1st 2026. Tervetuloa !

📣 🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School Unveils The Pedagogical Vision: Bringing Finnish Excellence and Local Relevance Together in Taiwan
🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School is honored to articulate its core pedagogical philosophy: a future-focused, student-centered model of education that combines the internationally respected strengths of Finnish education with the cultural richness, academic aspirations, and community values of Taiwan.
At the heart of the school’s approach is a belief that children learn best when they feel safe, curious, respected, and empowered. Rather than emphasizing memorization alone, the school prioritizes deep understanding, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, multilingual communication, and student wellbeing. Learning is designed to nurture the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and ethically.
✳️. A Holistic Educational Philosophy
Drawing inspiration from Finland’s globally recognized education model, Kaohsiung Finland International School embraces several key principles:
Equity and Inclusion: Every child is supported to succeed through differentiated teaching and personalized pathways.
Joyful Learning: Motivation grows when learning is meaningful, hands-on, and connected to real life.
Trust and Autonomy: Teachers are empowered as professionals, and students are encouraged to take ownership of learning.
Wellbeing as Foundation: Strong emotional health, balanced schedules, and positive relationships are essential for academic success.
Future Competencies: Communication, adaptability, digital literacy, and problem-solving are developed across all subjects.
Phenomenon-Based Learning: A Signature Finnish Approach
✳️ A defining feature of the Finnish model is Phenomenon-Based Learning (PhBL)—an interdisciplinary method where students investigate real-world topics or “phenomena” rather than studying subjects in isolation.
Instead of learning science, mathematics, language, and social studies separately, students explore broad themes such as climate change, food systems, smart cities, oceans, health, or sustainable transportation through multiple lenses. This mirrors how problems exist in the real world and helps students make authentic connections across disciplines.
✳️ Implementing Phenomenon-Based Learning in the Taiwan Context
🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School recognizes that successful innovation must also respect local context. In Taiwan, Phenomenon-Based Learning can be especially powerful when integrated with local culture, community strengths, and curriculum expectations.
1. Applying Taiwan-Based Real-World Themes
Students engage with phenomena rooted in Taiwan’s environment and society, such as:
Marine ecosystems and coastal conservation in southern Taiwan
Earthquakes, resilience, and disaster preparedness.
Smart manufacturing and semiconductor innovation
Indigenous heritage and cultural preservation.
Urban sustainability in Kaohsiung’s green transformation
Food security through Taiwan’s agricultural systems.
These themes make learning relevant while strengthening civic identity.
2. Align with Academic Excellence
Phenomenon-Based Learning does not replace rigorous academics—it organizes them meaningfully. Core standards in literacy, mathematics, sciences, and languages remain explicit and measurable within each project.
For example, a unit on renewable energy may include:
Mathematics through data analysis and measurement.
Science through electricity and environmental systems.
English and Mandarin through research and presentation.
Social studies through policy and economics.
Design through prototype creation.
3. Bilingual and Multilingual Learning Opportunities
In Taiwan’s international environment, projects can naturally integrate English, Mandarin, and additional languages, helping students communicate ideas across cultures and audiences.
4. Community Partnerships
Partnerships with universities, technology companies, environmental groups, museums, and local government can bring authentic expertise into the classroom. Students learn not only from textbooks, but from the wider community.
5. Respect for Taiwanese Family Expectations
The school values the strong commitment Taiwanese families place on education. Clear learning outcomes, transparent assessment, and visible academic progress ensure parents understand how inquiry-based learning leads to strong results and future readiness.
✳️ What This Looks Like in Practice
A middle school unit on “Future Kaohsiung” might address students:
How can Kaohsiung become one of Asia’s most sustainable and livable cities?
Students would investigate transportation, air quality, architecture, economics, public spaces, and citizen wellbeing. They would gather data, interview stakeholders, design solutions, and present proposals—building academic knowledge alongside confidence and leadership.
✳️ Preparing Students for Tomorrow
🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School believes education must prepare students not only for exams, but for life. By blending Finnish pedagogical excellence with Taiwanese values and opportunity, the school aims to develop compassionate, capable, globally minded young people ready to shape a better future.
✳️ 🇫🇮 Kaohsiung Finland International School Launches at a Defining Moment in Finland–Taiwan Cooperation
Why This Moment Matters
As both societies deepen collaboration in strategic sectors including sustainable energy, advanced manufacturing, digital innovation, and emerging technologies such as quantum computing, the opening of the school reflects a broader need: world-class education that supports globally mobile families, future talent development, and stronger people-to-people ties.
The launch of Kaohsiung Finland International School comes during a period of accelerating economic and educational exchange between Finland and Taiwan. Both are innovation-driven, export-oriented societies that value resilience, technological excellence, sustainability, and lifelong learning.
As business partnerships expand in sectors such as renewable energy systems, smart infrastructure, semiconductors, AI, and quantum research, more international professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, and executives are relocating across borders with their families. These globally minded families increasingly seek schools that offer more than traditional academic pathways—they want education that develops creativity, wellbeing, multilingual fluency, adaptability, and future-ready skills.
This changing demand has helped shape the timing of the school’s launch.
“Families today are addressing different questions than they did a decade ago,” said a spokesperson for
🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School. “They still value academic excellence, but they also seek balance, student wellbeing, innovation, intercultural competence, and learning models that prepare children for a rapidly changing world.”
✳️ Meeting the Evolving Expectations of International Expatriate Families
In recent years, expatriate professionals and internationally mobile families have shown increasing interest in schools that provide:
Strong academic outcomes without excessive pressure.
Student wellbeing and healthy school-life balance.
Inquiry-based and interdisciplinary learning.
English-rich and multilingual environments.
Digital literacy and innovation skills
Inclusive communities with global values.
Pathways to higher education worldwide.
The Finnish education model is internationally recognized for addressing exactly these priorities. Known for trust-based teaching, equity, student support, and holistic development, it resonates strongly with families seeking both excellence and humanity in education.
At the 🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School it is established to meet this emerging demand in southern Taiwan and to provide an educational home for local and international families alike.
✳️🏆 Why Kaohsiung
The selection of Kaohsiung was both strategic and deeply aligned with the school’s vision.
As Taiwan’s leading southern metropolis and major port city, Kaohsiung is undergoing a remarkable transformation—from an industrial center to a hub for technology, green industry, culture, and international investment. The city’s momentum mirrors many values associated with modern Finnish society: sustainability, smart urban planning, innovation, and quality of life.
Kaohsiung offers several unique advantages:
1. Gateway to Southern Taiwan and Global Industry
Kaohsiung is a vital center for logistics, shipping, energy, manufacturing, and advanced industry. As southern Taiwan continues to attract international investment and talent, demand for premium international education is growing.
2. Sustainability and Urban Renewal
The city’s investments in green infrastructure, waterfront revitalization, public transit, and livability align naturally with Finnish expertise in sustainable cities and environmental responsibility.
3. High Quality of Life for Families
Kaohsiung offers space, accessibility, sunshine, family-friendly neighborhoods, cultural amenities, and a comparatively relaxed pace of life—qualities highly valued by relocating families.
4. Untapped Opportunity in International Education
While northern Taiwan has long been associated with international schooling, Kaohsiung represents an exciting opportunity to serve families seeking world-class education in a fast-rising southern economic center.
✳️ A Natural Bridge Between Finland and Taiwan
🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School sees itself as more than a school—it is a bridge connecting two societies that share commitments to education, innovation, democracy, sustainability, and global engagement.
By bringing Finnish pedagogical values to Kaohsiung, the school aims to support the families driving tomorrow’s industries while helping students grow into thoughtful, capable, internationally minded leaders.
🇫🇮 Looking Towards The Future
As Finland and Taiwan continue strengthening cooperation in strategic sectors, the need for educational institutions that serve globally mobile talent and cultivate the next generation becomes increasingly clear.
Launching now in Kaohsiung is therefore both timely and forward-looking: a response to changing family expectations, a contribution to regional development, and an investment in the future relationship between Finland and Taiwan.
Tervetuloa and Kiitos !

🇫🇮 Kaohsiung Finland International School
(Phenomenon-Based Learning)
🇫🇮 KSFIS Kaohsiung Finland International School

While most countries are drilling phonics into 4 year olds, Finland lets children play. And somehow Finland keeps winning.
Finland consistently ranks number one in global literacy despite not introducing formal reading instruction until age seven. The reason is not magic. It is brain development.
Researchers found that the neural pathways required for reading are simply not fully formed in most children before age six or seven. Pushing the skill earlier does not accelerate development. It creates stress, resistance and a complicated early relationship with learning.
Finland fills those early years with play, storytelling, conversation and social development. All of which build the exact cognitive foundations that make reading click naturally when the brain is actually ready.
Children taught to read at seven consistently catch up to and surpass early readers by age nine.
The race to start early is not giving children an advantage. Finland proved it is just making them tired sooner.
