[聊聊英文寫作]

很多人都以為小孩在美國長大，英文就是超好。

沒有。沒有這回事。
語言的掌握與拿捏文字的力道，都需要練習的。

今天跟弟弟在家一起練習寫作，我們學習兩件事：simile & metaphor，還有 descriptive language。

前者，也就是中文的「明喻」與「暗喻」。
一開始，
as fast as -- 弟弟寫 as fast as a lightning bolt
(我：嗯，中規中矩。）

接下來
as loud as -- 弟弟寫 as loud as a microwave
(我：嗯，很有趣誒！）

但是到了 descriptive language ，就開始有狀況了。

他抓不住什麼叫做 descriptive or precise。

因此，他把
some new clothes 改成 some silly clothes

happy 改成 very happy

我跟他說：你要讓文字給人一個感官化的想像，我沒有辦法想像 new=silly 或是用 very 會表現出怎麼樣的感覺。

他想想，把some silly clothes 改成 some very silly clothes

很堅持 very 就是一種 descriptive language。

我說：very 沒有辦法表現出更細緻的感覺，你記得我拍的影片、寫的文章嗎？我基本上不會用到 very 這個字，這是發明給不知道要說什麼的人用的。

後來我們討論一下，他想一想，把這些擦掉，
some new clothes 改成 339 new (pairs of) trousers

happy 改成 jumping from ground to apartment ceiling

我說：我很喜歡誒，但是不用寫跳到 apartment 的天花板吧？
弟弟：你說要 specific 不是嗎？

吼！這小孩！

家長的字句讓我想到從前帶著他們家小朋友學習的那段時光。那是我剛開始成立 STEAMandarin （Herestory Institute 前身）的時候，除了教中文也教英文，因為我也還在抓自己未來的教學方向。

雖然小朋友一開始對英文的拿捏還不夠好，但是因為家長發現了孩子在學校的英文底子出現了狀況，因此特地請我幫忙評估，後來就開始線上上課。

即使遠距上課，孩子突飛猛進到我嚇一跳，我覺得孩子差不多了，因此就跟家長說沒問題，他們可以接下來靠自己了，很開心他們底子夠扎實，甚至後來申請學校都是很好的成績。

現在雖然教學重心是在 lifelong skills ，但是對於英語教學還是很手癢，就拿自己小孩實驗。

還好小孩離中學還有幾年，可以讓我偶而小試一下😅

Choco mice and the giant peanut 🥜

在赤崁樓前，我遇到了好久不見的草編草蜢仔（tsháu-meh-á）。

走近前一看，低頭編織的師傅身前的保麗龍盒子上插著好幾種草編童玩，有金魚、蜻蜓、甚至還有黑面琵鷺！在這些樸拙可愛的草編玩具當中，我們還能見到七彩繽紛的捏麵人穿插其中。甚至記不得多久沒見過這些東西的我忍不住興奮地蹲下來，這才看到保麗龍盒上的文字，原來，巧手製作這些草編童玩與捏麵人的阿智師，是一位重度智能障礙。

現年57歲的阿智師因為家境貧困沒辦法受到良好的教育，又必須一肩扛起照顧老母、失智大姊與三位兒女的重擔，經常從安平過來赤崁樓販售自己的作品。他露出孩童般的笑容向我介紹每一個草編童玩：「這個黑面琵鷺是我自己發明的作法，外面沒有的喔。」
「那阿智師是怎麼學草編玩具還有捏麵人的呢？」
「都是要和師父學的呀，我的草編老師還有捏麵人老師都是台南很厲害的師父喔，可是，草編師父太喜歡喝酒，現在已經不在了。」
「那捏麵人的師父呢？」
「我的捏麵人師父是杜牧河喔！你知道他嗎？你查查看，他很有名喔。」

我立刻低頭用手機搜尋，這才知道杜牧河是台南特別著名的泥塑大師。被稱為「炎師」的杜牧河，父親杜定仁也是著名的捏麵人師傅，談起炎師的阿智師眼神充滿了尊敬與感謝：「師父對我非常好喔！他看我比較困難，就說不可以收我學費也要教會我，真的是很好很好的人喔！」

聊起自己的師父與作品，阿智師開始滔滔不絕：「現在的捏麵人大部分是用超輕黏土，可是以前的捏麵人是用糯米做的，所以台語叫做『秫米尪仔』（tsu̍t-bí-ang-á），甚至可以吃喔。」
他拿起手機給我看他的捏麵人：「現在有捏麵人的地方真的很少，大概剩台南還有鹿港比較盛行，鹿港的施教鏞老師也對我很照顧，對了，你知道鹿港捏麵人一定少不了公雞嗎？」

我搖搖頭，央求阿智師現場現做一隻公雞給我。他翻開工具箱拿出材料，只見他搓一搓捏一捏剪一剪，立刻以熟練的手法變出了一隻鮮豔奪目的可愛公雞。不像我一直迷惘的畫龍點睛，原來最後一個步驟不盡然是眼睛，捏麵人公雞最傳神的地方在於展開的翅膀，最後一個步驟是整理羽毛。

「那麼草蜢仔呢？草蜢仔就是『草蜢仔弄雞公』的草蜢仔嗎？」
「是的，草蜢仔就是蚱蜢喔，現在是用椰子樹葉做的，有些人會用棕櫚樹葉，早期我們會用林投樹葉，林投樹在漁光島上很多，可是有很多刺而且做出來只能放三天，椰子樹葉的大概可以放七天還不太需要再處理，不然有時候還要煮過才可以用呢。」

再次央求阿智師現做草編童玩的我，這才發現他的手藝定價低廉到讓人不可置信，捏麵人與草編童玩只要50元，甚至買二送一！我帶走了一隻捏麵人公雞，一隻金魚、一隻蜻蜓還有一隻阿智師自創的黑面琵鷺，他的草蜢仔還有黑面琵鷺都能吹出響亮的嗶嗶笛聲，非常有趣。他開心地拿出袋子說要替我裝起來，原本自己出於環保意識搖手拒絕，非常愛惜自己作品的阿智師堅持：「要裝好才不會弄壞喔。」

一隻草蜢仔會讓常人看到一隻蟲，詩人看到一首詩，音樂家看到一首歌——阿智師的草蜢仔，讓所有人看到了一個手藝人努力堅毅又樂觀向上的生命力。

［ #認識台灣夏令營］

Day 9 #台南 #四草紅樹林保護區 #益生堂 #安平古堡

台南是一個生態與文化交融的地方，雖然只能一瞥鹽田（留給未來體驗🥹），但可以看到台灣南部的濕地保護區：四草紅樹林生態保護區，以及因此保育的動植物，頂著大太陽參觀雖值得，但更希望有更細膩的解說。

靠近參觀路線的售票處，
有哄抬價錢的情況。

休息過後，我們到喜愛的中藥鋪轉型為養生果乾店巡禮。和看起來富貴吉祥的老闆娘寒暄過後，孩子們越選越多商品🤪

最後，這一天以安平古堡巡禮為結。
特展「從大員到台灣」，孩子們可以結合我們的台灣史學習，認識國姓爺前後的台灣。

Sicao Green Tunnel showcased tropical wetlands in Taiwan. Although we could only catch a glimpse of the salt fields (we’ll save that for another time 🥹), we got to see the wetland conservation areas of southern Taiwan, particularly the Sicao Mangrove Nature Reserve. The protected flora and fauna are fascinating, and while braving the scorching sun for the tour was worthwhile, I wish there had been more detailed explanations.

There are some ticket vendors near the tour route who are hiking up the prices.

After a break, we visited our favorite traditional herbal medicine shop, which has transformed into a health-focused dried fruit store. After a pleasant chat with the prosperous-looking owner, the kids kept picking out more and more goodies 🤪.

Finally, we ended the day with a visit to Anping Fort. The special exhibition “From Tayuan to Taiwan” allowed the kids to connect their Taiwan history lessons with an understanding of Taiwan before and after Koxinga’s era.

台南！
要認識台灣，真的一定要到這個充滿魅力與人味的城市。

我們從買茶喝、吃丹丹漢堡開始。 😂

然後沿路找劍獅、各色路邊的古蹟。
到赤崁樓認識台灣史、求文昌籤。
然後在日治時代的警察宿舍中，享受從宮原眼科到台南展設的冰淇淋。

一整個場域只有我們跟一兩組日本客人，大家都享受著台灣限定的冰品，大推！

Tainan!
To truly understand Taiwan, you must visit this charming city filled with warmth and character.

We started our adventure by buying tea and grabbing a bite at Dandan Burger. 😂

Then, we went on a quest to find lion statues (Jianshi) and explore the various historical sites along the way. At Chihkan Tower, we delved into Taiwan’s history and drew a Wenchang fortune stick.

Next, we enjoyed ice cream from Miyahara Ophthalmology in the Japanese-era police dormitory, now part of a Tainan exhibition.

The entire place had just us and a couple of Japanese visitors, all savoring the Taiwan-exclusive treats. Highly recommended!

Day 7 #高雄市立美術館 #科學工藝博物館 #六合夜市

雨後的高雄，竟然比幾天前的台北沁涼。

我們漫步到了高雄市立美術館
看的是黃土水、洪瑞麟、李澤藩、林玉山、當然還有陳澄波的作品，從藝術品中認識台灣歷史。

收藏家鞏玉葉和孫子以VR 的方式，讓參觀民眾一窺這次展出的背後故事。

我們在體驗VR 的同時，也看到了時光中的另一個展示：那股溫暖、鑑賞、對藝術的執著與熱情。

之後再到科工館，然後又去夜市。
這一天，好充實。

After the rain, Kaohsiung feels even cooler and more refreshing than Taipei did a few days ago.
We took a leisurely stroll to the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, where we explored the works of Huang Tu-shui, Hung Jui-lin, Lee Tze-fan, Lin Yu-shan, and, of course, Chen Cheng-po. Through their art, we gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s history.

Collector Kung Yu-yeh, along with her grandson, used VR technology to weave together the stories behind this exhibition.

While experiencing the VR, we also glimpsed another display through time: the warmth, appreciation, dedication, and passion for art.

Right after a fine luncheon at a vegetarian restaurant, we went to National Science and Technology Museum, and then another night market exploration.

Kaohsiung has so much yet to see!
