Ya-Qing will organize a panel on ‘’𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲’’ during the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting, which takes place onsite in Honolulu, Hawai‘i and through hybrid and virtual options worldwide April 16 through 20, 2024.

“𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀,” said Ya-Qing.

“AAG's Annual Meeting is a source of inspiration for geographers worldwide,” said Rebecca Lave, President of the American Association of Geographers and Associate Dean for Social and Historical Sciences at Indiana University-Bloomington. “I’m proud to have been part of the creative engagements to develop this meeting this year.”

The meeting will host more than 1,000 sessions, panels, workshops, and land engagements on topics along themes established with local Hawaiian thought leaders and AAG’s local institutional partner, the University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa Department of Geography and Environment (GEO):

• 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 - ʻ𝗔ʻ𝗼𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘂 𝗸𝗮 ‘𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗶 𝗸𝗮 𝗵𝗮̄𝗹𝗮𝘂 𝗵𝗼ʻ𝗼𝗸𝗮𝗵𝗶 (“All knowledge is not taught in the same school”), focusing on reciprocal scholarship, a method of inquiry that prioritizes non-extractive research and community-building engagement.
• 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 - 𝗛𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗶ʻ𝗶 𝗸𝗮 ‘𝗮̄𝗶𝗻𝗮, 𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗮𝘂𝘄𝗮̄ 𝗸𝗲 𝗸𝗮̄𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗮 (The land is a chief; humans are its servant), confronting exploitative economic and governing systems that have damaged the earth and our relations, and asking how we can rectify their harm and move beyond them.
• 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗠𝗼̄𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗶 𝗸𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝗶 𝗸𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗼 𝗸𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗮 (Unfolded by the waters are the faces of the flowers), reflecting the agency and urgency we have to create better relationship to place, land, and water.

Ya-Qing’s own presentation responds to the cultural perspective of resilience to wind, exploring wind resilience in the landscape on the Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan. She will present the wind Resilience in the landscape of the Penghu Archipelago, the mapping result of her fieldwork on the Penghu islands.

“The content and approach to this year’s AAG Annual Meeting reflects a remarkable range of practice in geography, infused with the desire to better the world,” said Gary Langham, PhD, Executive Director of American Association of Geographers.
