“A big part of studying away in Trinidad is the 8-10 day excursion to another Caribbean island. During my time studying away in the Spring of 2018, my group traveled to Cuba. Because Trinidad is a English speaking Caribbean country and Cuba is Spanish speaking, it was very interesting to see the cultural similarities and differences between the two islands. While we were in Cuba, we traveled mainly around Havana and a smaller city ironically called Trinidad, Cuba and learned about the lives of Cubans in both urban settings and smaller towns. From the amazing restaurants, to the beautiful architecture, to the insightful museums, going to Cuba was definitely one of the biggest highlights of my semester away.” -Yasmin Affey

Hi everyone, my name is Yasmin Affey and I studied abroad in Trinidad during the spring semester of 2018. As a student of the Trinity in Trinidad program, I got the opportunity to participate in Carnival. A day full of colorful costumes, beautiful soca music, and uplifting energy, Carnival Tuesday is arguably the biggest cultural celebration in all of Trinidad and Tobago. In addition to participating in Carnival, our Spring 2018 cohort also took part in many pre-Carnival celebrations. These included attending several different fetes, going to the Panorama semi-finals (the steel pan is the national instrument of the twin islands), participating in Jouvay Monday (as well as making our own costumes for it) and so much more. In addition, because of the ethnic and religious diversity of Trinidad, we had several opportunities to immerse ourselves in other cultural celebrations as well. We also spent some time in Tobago and learned about the Tobagonian culture more specifically, as well as gained some insight on the types of natural resources that may be found on the island. By the end of the semester, I felt like I learned so much about a country that I initially knew very little about and I am grateful that I was able to have such an opportunity.
