Hello everyone!
The Hugh Wooding Law School’s Human Rights Committee serves as a vehicle to enable students to work for social justice by interacting with members of the wider society to uphold their entitlement to their unalienable rights. Thus, in light of the transition of the global education system to virtual learning, the Committee is embarking on this laptop distribution project in our attempt to safeguard a child’s right to education. The goal of this laptop distribution initiative is to ensure that students are equipped in the classroom to keep up with their educational progress. So, we humbly ask for your contribution to this worthy cause!

Happy International Day of Older Persons!

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS
Here is Dr Sangeeta Manerikar with a message!

Since 1991 the United Nations have celebrated International Day of Older Persons on October 1st to recognize the importance of senior citizens and to examine issues that impact them. The COVID-19 pandemic created a severe impact on the health, rights and well being of senior citizens globally. To protect our elders, social distancing is crucial Thus, this year the HWLS Human Rights Committee will be embarking on a celebration of the lives of our senior citizens

Several deaths related to the virus in T&T were among people over age 60. Older persons are also challenged by issues such as social isolation, loneliness, inadequate access to health care or social services, neglect or abuse in institutions and care facilities, increased poverty and unemployment, as well as heightened fear, anxiety and trauma as a result of the pandemic.

So let us do our part to protect our vulnerable groups in this pandemic and keep our beloved senior citizens safe and sound now and always✊

The Executive of HWLS HRC was fortunate to participate in a virtual workshop hosted by the Break The Silence Advocacy Group spearheaded by Mr. Marcus Kissoon .
The workshop involved :
•What is gender
•How it becomes important in the analysis of child sexual abuse
•Data existing nationally regionally
•What came out of the action research of Break the Silence how children experience sexual abuse as gendered beings
•Short discussion around what do you think as a group contribute to the larger society
We hope to be partnering more on advocating for the human rights of children in collaboration with Living Waters and Break the Silence in the future.
