Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, one of the departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Education. The Department offers programmes in: French, Linguistics, Portuguese, Spanish and courses in Academic Literacies, Patois (Lesser Antillean French-lexicon
Creole), and Trinidad and Tobago Sign Language (TTSL). Our course offerings are diverse and range from intermediate-advanced language studies and traditional linguistics and literature courses to topic-driven courses. Our academic staff members are actively engaged in a wide range of research interests such as cultural and (socio)linguistic identity, language learning disabilities, Trinidad & Tobago Sign Language interpreting, feminism, and foreign language business. We hold to the Faculty’s vision to equip well-rounded students for entry into today’s competitive, multilingual, global marketplace. At the same time, we equally recognise the importance of cultural exchange programmes through which students acquire a broader, more comprehensive understanding of society and the diversity of Caribbean America and Latin America. Our aim is to help students to enhance their linguistic dexterity, communication skills, critical thinking and cultural awareness. Programmes in the department prepare our students for active global citizenship by providing them with the disciplinary tools of linguistic, cultural, and literary analysis.
