They may look like simple classroom activities, but puzzles and blocks support several important areas of early development.
As children turn, match, stack and arrange pieces, they practice spatial thinking, understanding shapes, positions, size and how objects fit together. Research has linked early puzzle play with stronger spatial-transformation skills, while block play provides opportunities to explore early geometry, measurement and mathematical relationships.
These activities also encourage problem-solving and persistence. When a piece does not fit or a tower falls, children are challenged to pause, try a different approach and keep going. That persistence in working through difficult tasks is an important part of learning.
Puzzles and block play can also strengthen focus, working memory and self-regulation as children remember their goal, manage distractions and adjust their plan. These executive-function skills provide an important foundation for future learning.
