On February 20, 2014, history was created when the University of the West Indies (UWI) celebrated the establishment of an official student chapter of the internationally recognized Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The five-week-old student chapter is headed by nine UWI mechanical engineering students who are guided by IMechE member and UWI Engineering lecturer, Dr. Chris Maharaj. The

group was formally launched when it teamed up with the local student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to host a technical seminar. Held at UWI’s Faculty of Engineering, the event was attended by the university’s lecturers and over 100 students in the mechanical and electrical disciplines. John Thompson of Desalcott, feature speaker Mr. Mark Rattansingh of BPTT, and Dr. Anthony Green of Canada, Chair of the IMechE Americas Region. Attendees learned about Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams which was the theme of the seminar. They also learned about the IMechE, a professional engineering institution based in the United Kingdom. Over 160 years old, the organization consists of more than 100,000 members from over 135 countries. With a vision of “improving the world through engineering”, IMechE provides its members with advice, support and training, thus creating more knowledgeable, skilled engineers.
