Is your Newborn spitting up?

Babies spit up milk during or after a feeding. Some babies spit up more than others. Your baby is more likely to spit up if he/she cries hard before a feeding, eats too much too quickly, or swallows air during the feeding.

Babies have sphincter muscle at the entrance to their stomachs, which allows milk to come up with air bubbles. Spitting up is usually not harmful, but you may reduce it in the following ways:

- Burp your newborn baby during and after feedings ( burp after each breast or after every 2 ounce of formula)

- Do not overfeed him/her with formula.

- Handle him/her gently and, after feeding, position him/her either on the side or sitting in an infant car seat with his/her head elevated

Babies generally outgrow the tendency to spit up by 5 - 9 months of age.

Continuous or frequent forceful (projectile) vomiting is more serious and can lead to dehydration. If this happens after each feeding and your baby appears sick or weak...contact your baby's pediatrician

What is "Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis (seb-o-REE-ik der-muh-TI-tis) is a common skin disorder that mainly affects your scalp, causing scaly, itchy, red skin and stubborn dandruff.

In infants, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp is known as cradle cap. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect your face, upper chest, back and other areas of your body that have many oil (sebaceous) glands.

Cradle cap shows up in the first few months of a babies life as crusty, white yellowish patches on the scalp. It is not pretty, but it's harmless.

It will typically go away on its own within a few months, but if it bothers you, try shampooing more often and gently brushing your baby's scalp with a soft brush or massaging it with a wash cloth.

For stubborn cases, apply a small amount of coconut or olive oil and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then gently use a soft bristle brush to remove the scales before shampooing.

It's important not to scratch, comb, or vigorously brush the scalp to remove flakes, as this can cause further irritation.

If the cradle cap doesn't improve or spreads to other areas, talk to your baby's doctor, who may recommend a medicated shampoo.
