This term my older friends are working on a lot of extension lessons. Once they’ve mastered the concrete material or lesson, they can now move onto the abstract lesson, which is paperwork. Taking all that they’ve learned and solidifying it through paper extensions.

Here is an example of how we extend a lesson or material. After matching and naming secondary colors, my friends chose to find colors in the environment to match to the tablets, while my older friend took this lesson that she has mastered into practicing her handwriting and learning the words for each color.

In Montessori, packing away work is a critical, respectful process that teaches responsibility, order, and concentration. It is treated as part of the “work cycle” rather than a punishment. Children learn to return materials to their specific place when finished, fostering independence by, placing completed work back on the shelf or returning trays.
