Ministry of Education Reinforces Commitment to Safe and Secure Schools

Following the incident at San Juan North Secondary School yesterday, a multi-agency team visited the school today Saturday 12 September 2026, as part of a coordinated response to address the concerns arising from the incident and support the school community.

The team comprised representatives from the Ministry of Education, National Maintenance Training and Security Company Limited (MTS), the Education Facilities Planning and Procurement Division (EFPPD), the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA), the School Health, Safety and Security Unit, the Director of School Supervision, School Supervisor, as well as the school’s Principal and Vice Principal.

As part of the coordinated response, representatives from the Ministry of Homeland Security will also provide an intervention aimed at supporting teachers and strengthening the overall response at the school.

The Ministry of Education remains committed to working collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders to maintain safe, secure and supportive learning environments for all students, teachers and staff.

Vive l'apprentissage! Long Live Learning! 🇫🇷🇹🇹

As the 2026–2027 Academic Year continues, The Ministry of Education, through its Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), the Embassy of France in Trinidad and Tobago and Alliance Française have come together to launch a new initiative bringing French language and culture to selected secondary schools.

Held at Bishop Anstey High School, Port of Spain, the launch of this initiative was attended by Dr. the Honourable Michael R. Dowlath, Minister of Education, His Excellency Guillaume Pierre, Ambassador of France to Trinidad and Tobago, Ms. Debby Boodhan, Principal and Ms. Dawn Francis, Vice Principal of Bishop Anstey High School, Port of Spain and Cannon Richard Jacob, Chairman of the Bishop Anstey High School Board of Management.

Through cultural presentations, interactive sessions and French-language activities, these school will allow students to explore the opportunities that language learning offers from building communication and empathy to connecting with people and cultures around the world.

This initiative serves to strengthen French education while creating richer international and cultural experiences for our students. The Ministry of Education remains dedicated to fostering collaborations that provide students with opportunities for more immersive cultural education, language learning and global connection.

The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, MP, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago hosted a special luncheon in recognition of the recent appointment of several Permanent Secretaries.

The luncheon was held on Thursday 10th September 2026 at the Diplomatic Centre St. Ann’s, Port of Spain under the theme:

Bonjour, Opportunity! Expanding French Language & Cultural Experiences 🇫🇷🇹🇹

The Ministry of Education, through its Curriculum Planning and Development Division, the Embassy of France in Port of Spain and Alliance Française are collaborating on a series of visits to selected secondary schools during the 2026–2027 Academic Year.

Dr. the Honourable Michael R. Dowlath, Minister of Education and His Excellency Guillaume Pierre, Ambassador of France to Trinidad and Tobago attended the launch of this initiative at the Bishop Anstey High School, Port of Spain on Wednesday 9th September 2026.

Addressing students at the launch, Minister Dowlath emphasised the opportunities available to students through language learning and how learning a language can help them to develop communication, empathy, independence and human interaction.

“Language opens that human experience for you, so you don’t depend on another person or someone else to create your own enjoyment and satisfaction in life. You can sit and you can read. You can speak with someone. It allows you to interact with others and to learn about other countries, to learn about the other person.”

The launch was also attended by Ms. Debby Boodhan, Principal and Ms. Dawn Francis, Vice Principal of Bishop Anstey High School, Port of Spain, Cannon Richard Jacob, Chairman of the Bishop Anstey High School Board of Management, French Teachers, Curriculum Coordinators and French students from Forms 4-6.

Following the launch, Minister Dowlath also toured the school visiting several classrooms to engage with students and staff.

At each school, Ambassador Pierre will lead a cultural presentation and interactive Q&A, while representatives of Alliance Française will facilitate French-language activities. Representatives of Alliance Française will also facilitate presentations and French-language activities. The visits will also create opportunities for engagement with school leaders and French educators, with a focus on strengthening collaboration in teacher development, exchanges, resources and institutional partnerships.

The Ministry of Education welcomes opportunities to strengthen the teaching and learning of French and to broaden the international and cultural experiences available to our students. This initiative with the Embassy of France and Alliance Française represents an important step in translating our discussions into meaningful engagement at the school level.
