Mindful Me Journal: Launching mental and emotional health in and beyond the classroom 🚀📔
Dr. the Honourable Michael R. Dowlath, Minister of Education, joined The Honourable Vandana Mohit, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS), The Honourable Wayne Sturge, Minister of Defence, and other senior government officials at the launch of the Mindful Me Journal within the St. George East Education District on Wednesday, 1 July 2026 at UWI, St. Augustine Campus.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Dowlath underscored the importance of prioritising students' mental and emotional well-being. He said the initiative is about creating space within schools and homes for children to better understand their emotions and manage pressure before it becomes overwhelming.
"The Mindful Me Journal is not simply another booklet for a schoolbag," Minister Dowlath said. "It is a practical tool that encourages students to pause, reflect, write, identify their emotions, and develop healthy responses to stress. It reminds us that education is not only about preparing children to answer questions in an examination. It is also about preparing them to face life's challenges with confidence, self-awareness, and resilience."
The journal has been specifically designed to support the emotional well-being of students preparing for the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) and other examinations by providing practical strategies and coping mechanisms to help manage examination-related stress and anxiety.
Also in attendance were The Honourable Shivanna Shira Sam, M.P and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Utilities; Dr. Natalie Chaitan-Maharaj, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services; Ms. Maryam Abdu, UNICEF Deputy Representative; senior officials of the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services; as well as principals, teachers, students, and parents representing twenty (20) primary schools within the St. George East Education District.
The Ministry of Education is a key partner in the implementation of the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services' Mindful Me Journal Project. This project aligns with the Ministry's commitment to supporting the psychological health and well-being of all students so that they can learn, grow and succeed in a holistic education system.
