Reading ≠ comprehension. But the two work together. 📚

A child may be able to read the words on a page and still need support understanding, connecting and responding to what they’ve read.

The goal isn’t simply to help children say the words.

It’s to help them become readers who can read, understand and think about what they read.

What does reading look like for your child right now?

Handwriting tools you may not think of...
✅Toothpicks- Use them to promote a refined grasp. Poke into paper, cardboard, or to drop into a container with a small opening such as a spice bottle.

✅Pushpins- Promote a tripod grasp with separation of the sides of the hand. Push into a bulletin board (make HOLE letters on paper!) and promote an extended wrist.

✅Rubber bands- Use them to build up a DIY pencil grasp on pencils, crayons, and markers.

✅Clothes pins- Pinch one on a pencil to encourage separation of the sides of the hand when holding a pencil.

✅Buttons- Tuck one into the palm of the hand and hold it there with the pinkie and ring fingers to promote a separation of the sides of the hand when writing.

✅Golf Pencil- Use this to encourage a functional grasp, pulling fingers down toward the point of the pencil.

How would you use these 6 items to work on pencil grasp & handwriting? Here are some handwriting activities without using a pencil: https://www.theottoolbox.com/handwriting-activities-that-dont-need/

Let's talk about how to improve working memory. Ok, get real here. If you see a phone number and need to punch it into your phone, how many times do you need to check the number? Or can you remember all of the digits in one go?

That's working memory.

And that is a skill we are losing because we share contacts digitally, and we probably don't even know most of our most-used phone numbers.

But that is one way to support the skill of working memory...used for MANY functional tasks. Here are support strategies and tools: https://www.theottoolbox.com/how-to-improve-working-memory
