THE ROD OF GOD

"Then Moses took his wife and his sons and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the rod of God in his hand." (Exodus 4:20 NKJV)

While tending his father-in-law's flock, Moses had a dramatic supernatural encounter with God that set him on the path of God's divine purpose in his life.

But before Moses finally agreed to undertake the divine mission to return to Egypt and deliver the children of Israel, God had to perform some miraculous signs to convince Moses and strengthen his confidence in God.

The first of the miraculous signs was the turning of Moses' shepherd’s staff into a snake when he cast it on the ground before God.

Exodus 4:1-4 – RSV
1 Then Moses answered, "But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, 'The LORD did not appear to you.'"
2 The LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod."
3 And he said, "Cast it on the ground." So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.
4 But the LORD said to Moses, "Put out your hand, and take it by the tail" --so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand.

Before Moses cast his rod on the ground before God, it was only an ordinary dry wood, staff, or stick with which he tended the flock of his father-in-law. However, after Moses had willingly surrendered his rod to God, it ceased to be an ordinary rod or staff.

Although God continued to refer to it as Moses' rod, Moses never once called it his rod after his dramatic encounter with God. Moses had entirely and permanently relinquished any claim he had to his rod. Therefore, he rightly called it "the rod of God."

What a lesson for us today!

The rod of Moses represented his whole life. It symbolized his ambition, vocation, wisdom, skills, status, strength, or might. His rod was his identity, instrument, weapon, or defense in the desert. Therefore, when Moses willingly cast his rod on the ground before God, he surrendered or presented his life to God.

Although Moses was unsure of God's intention in asking him to cast his rod to the ground, he did so. This shows Moses' willingness or mindset to die to himself—to abandon, forget, or renounce his ambition, vocation, status, skills, wisdom, or strength. It takes such a willingness, disposition, or mindset to be extensively used by God!

Moses had surrendered his rod to God, though God had never taken it from his hand. Yet, Moses ceased to see it as belonging to him or as an ordinary shepherd's staff, and thus, he never used it again for a common purpose—tending the flock of his father-in-law.

After his divine encounter with God, Moses began to see his rod (a symbol of his life) as holy and supernatural, no longer an ordinary rod for tending the flock. Therefore, Moses chose to refer to it as "the rod of God" (Exo. 17:9).

Like Moses, having surrendered your life to Christ, it ceases to be yours, and you must treat it as such.

The Scripture amply testifies to this truth.

1 Corinthians 6:20 – NKJV
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.

Romans 14:7-8 – NKJV
7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.
8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's.

After his supernatural encounter with God, Moses returned to Egypt with a firm conviction that what he held in his hand was no longer his former ordinary shepherd rod but a holy, divine, or supernatural rod.

Exodus 4:20 – NKJV
20 Then Moses took his wife and his sons and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the rod of God in his hand. (NKJV).

With the rod of God in his hand, Moses wrought great exploits, signs, and wonders in Egypt that confounded and humiliated Pharaoh and all the sorcerers, magicians, and wise men in Egypt. He brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, thereby fulfilling his divine purpose in life.

Just as Moses began to see, call, regard, and treat his rod as the holy rod of God after surrendering it to God, having surrendered your life to Christ, you also must begin to see, call, regard, and treat yourself as sacred and holy to God—no longer as a common, unholy, natural, or ordinary person.

Anything consecrated to God ceases to be common, unholy, natural, or ordinary but sacred, holy, divine, or supernatural.

As a born-again believer who has willingly and unreservedly yielded his life to God, you must now begin to see and call yourself who and what God said you are now in Christ, not who or what you used to be before surrendering your life to Christ.

Having been joined together with Christ, you are now one spirit with Christ (1 Cor. 6:17). Therefore, as Jesus is, so are you now in this world (1 John 4:17). In Christ, you are now a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). You are righteous, holy, and anointed (1 Cor. 6:11, 2 Cor. 5:21, Col. 1:21-22). You are a king and a priest to God (Rev. 1:4-6).

If Moses had gone to Egypt to challenge Pharaoh with the mindset that what he held in his hand was simply a common shepherd's rod, he would have doubtlessly failed and died in Egypt.

If you fail to begin to think, speak, operate, and live according to your new and divine spiritual position, status, authority, and identity in Christ, you will be unable to accomplish God's purpose for your life.

Beloved, you are now a joint heir with Christ. Christ's authority, wisdom, power, wealth, and grace are available (Rom. 8:17). You are presently seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:6). You are anointed and sealed with the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 1:21-22).

You are the temple of God, and you are carrying about the fullness of God in your born-again spirit, just as Christ did while He lived physically in this world (Col. 1:19, 1 Cor. 3:17).

You are no longer a mere flesh or an ordinary natural person. Therefore, like Moses, stop seeing or regarding "your rod" (your life) as natural, ordinary, or common, but as sacred, holy, divine, or supernatural.

Arise today and begin to do mighty exploits and wonders with "the rod of God" in your hand.

Prayer:

My Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for opening my eyes of understanding today to the truth that, having surrendered my life to You, I am no longer a mere, common, or ordinary natural man. Dear Holy Spirit, teach and help me live and walk daily in the light of this truth, in Jesus' name. Amen.

WHAT IS THAT IN YOUR HAND?

"So the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod." And He said, "Cast it on the ground." So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it." (Exodus 4:2-3 NKJV)

While Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, God suddenly interrupted his daily routine and called his attention to his divine purpose or mission in life.

From the midst of the bush burning with fire yet not consumed, God said to Moses, "Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt." (Exo. 3:10 NKJV).

Moses was born for this purpose—to deliver and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt, the house of bo***ge. Moses had gone through everything to prepare him for his divine purpose. Likewise, all you have gone through is simply preparing you for your divine purpose or mission.

Although God had thoroughly prepared, enabled, anointed, and equipped Moses to fulfill his divine mission, Moses was unaware of this. He thus felt very inadequate for what God had fully prepared and equipped him to do when the set time came.

Like many believers today, Moses ignorantly believed that God was seeking a perfect person, or a Superman, to use. Therefore, Moses protested, saying, "O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue." (Exo. 4:10 NKJV).

If God only uses perfect people to accomplish His divine plans and purposes, God will find no man worthy of His use. Why? Because there is no man alive who is perfect in all his thoughts, emotions, ways, and actions!

But praise God that He does not wait for us to attain moral or spiritual perfection before He uses us. God uses us despite our human weaknesses, deficiencies, or inadequacies so that He alone may receive all the glory for whatever He uses us to accomplish for Him.

Paul testifies to this truth.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29 – NKJV
27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;
28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,
29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.

When God called Moses to be His divine instrument for the deliverance of the children of Israel from the yoke of slavery and bo***ge, he was very reluctant to undertake the mission because he could see nothing in his life or hand that God could use.

How mistaken Moses was! Why?

Because God had already placed in Moses' life and hands all He would need to accomplish God's purpose for his life!

However, to convince Moses that God had already equipped and anointed him for the mission he was called to undertake, God said, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod." And He said, "Cast it on the ground." So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it." (Exo. 4:2-3 NKJV).

Afterward, Moses was asked to pick up his rod again. Then God said to him, "And you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs." (Exo. 4:17 NKJV). Moses returned to Egypt with nothing but his rod in his hand, and he did nothing in Egypt without his rod in his hand!

Like Moses, you already have in your life and hand what God can bless and use to accomplish His divine purpose through you. What God has placed in your life and hand is suitable enough to accomplish God's purpose if you only present and surrender it to God, just as Moses gave and offered his rod.

God has been preserving, preparing, and equipping you for the divine purpose and mission He created you to accomplish. God will not call any man to undertake any mission for Him without first preparing, anointing, equipping, and enabling the man for the mission.

Paul affirms this truth in his epistle to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 2:10 – NKJV
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Suppose God says it is time for you to step out and undertake a mission for Him. In that case, He has fully anointed or enabled you for the mission, for no soldier goes to war at his own expense (1 Cor. 9:7). Therefore, quit seeking or giving excuses; instead, step out in faith today and begin to fulfill God's purpose for your life.

Beloved, while you may feel very inadequate, unsuitable, or unqualified for the divine mission or assignment that God is calling you to undertake for Him, the truth is that God will not call you to do anything if He has not first prepared, equipped, anointed, or enabled you to do it.

Like Moses, God has already placed "the rod" you need for your divine mission in your hand. God has anointed you to fulfill your divine purpose or mission in life. You already have what you need to begin doing what God calls you to do, right where you are.

Paul clearly states this truth, "Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God." (1 Cor. 1:21 NKJV).

Don't be discouraged by your human weaknesses, disabilities, or deficiencies, for God specializes in using "the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence." (1 Cor. 1:27-29 NKJV).

Therefore, like Moses, quit arguing with God or making excuses to God. Rise today with "your rod" in your hand and unreservedly yield it to God to deliver and bless the people and nations God has sent you. They are indeed waiting for your arrival and ministry.

Please don't keep them waiting in bo***ge any longer!

God has anointed you for this purpose!

Prayer:

My Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for preparing me to be a great instrument in Your hand from birth. I surrender my life unreservedly to You today to use as it pleases You for Your glory and the blessing of many nations and generations, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TAKE AWAY THE STONE

"Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days." (John 11:39 NKJV)

Lazarus was already dead and buried in a cave four days before the Lord Jesus eventually showed up at Bethany to raise him. At the tomb of Lazarus, when Jesus commanded that the stone rolled against the cave be removed, Lazarus' sister, Martha, protested.

John 11:38-40 – NKJV
38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."
40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?"

Martha wanted the stone left alone to contain within the cave the repulsive stench from the decomposing body of Lazarus, and thus away from the people.

Like Martha, some people today strive to carefully conceal or keep away the stench of their dead and rotten, sinful lives from people and even from Jesus Christ.

Some people today who are hurting, dying, decaying, and stinking inwardly employ "diverse and colorful stones" to seal their caves and hide their hurts, pains, sufferings, distresses, or anguish from people's sight.

Many good, charitable, or religious deeds and activities of people in public are mere religious masks or camouflage to contain or conceal their sinfulness, rottenness, stench, depression, or emptiness from the public eye.

Today, some people who are guilt-ridden, sorrowful, bitter, angry, and depressed are trying hard but in vain to hide or suppress their negative feelings by taking drugs, drinking, smoking, and clubbing.

Some celebrities or superstars who always wear a good smile in public and appear calm, happy, or fulfilled are often troubled, restless, hurting, and stinking inwardly. Likewise, many wealthy and influential people who laugh heartily in public wept bitterly in their closets.

Martha would not want Jesus and other guests who had gathered to sympathize with them to be offended, disgusted, and repelled by the repulsive stench of Lazarus' decomposing body in the cave, so she wanted the stone left alone.

Nevertheless, at Jesus' insistence, the stone was taken away. Instead of the people being offended, disgusted, or repelled by any stench, they glorified the Lord Jesus Christ when they saw Lazarus rise from the dead at Jesus' command (John 11:39-45). Hallelujah!

The Lord Jesus commanded that the stone laid against Lazarus' cave to contain his stench be removed before raising Lazarus back to life. Why?

Because God hates hypocrisy!

Jesus decries the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy.

Matthew 23:27-28 – NKJV
27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.
28 "Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Although the Lord Jesus came to raise Lazarus from the dead, He didn't do anything until the stone that had been rolled against the entrance to Lazarus' cave was removed.

Similarly, although the grace of God is available to all men today through Christ Jesus, it is only those who are willing to take away their "stones of hypocrisy" or take off their "religious masks or camouflages" and humbly turn to Christ and put their trust in Him that will experience God's mercy and grace.

The Scripture amply states this truth.

1 John 1:8-9 – NKJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Beloved, it is sheer foolishness to seek to hide your sinfulness or rottenness from the Lord, for He knows you inside out. Quit striving to conceal or keep Christ from your stench. No stench can repel Christ from you; only your hypocrisy and unbelief can repel Him.

Indeed, the stench from your rotten past or present sinful life may be such that people cannot stand or endure it, but Jesus Christ will never find your stink repulsive. No matter how rotten and stinking your life is, Jesus loves you and will never turn His back on you.

Friend, the Lord Jesus Christ is by your cave today, waiting for you to take away your stone or mask of pretense, hypocrisy, or deception, acknowledge your sinfulness and helplessness, and put your trust humbly and wholly in Him for your salvation or restoration.

Jesus Christ is the Resurrection and the Life, and He still heals, saves, revives, and restores dead and rotten souls today (John 10:10).

Take away your "stone" and receive from Jesus Christ today the gift of supernatural, everlasting, and abundant life. Don't worry about the stench; remove the stone and leave the rest to Jesus Christ, the Resurrection, and Life.

Why not do it now?

Prayer:

My Dear Heavenly Father, I take off my mask of hypocrisy and take away my stone of deception today, and I open the door of my heart and welcome Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, in Jesus' name. Amen.

THE FRAGRANCE OF CHRIST

"For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing." (2 Corinthians 2:15 NKJV)

Under the Old Covenant, when a worshipper brings his burnt offering to God to make atonement for his sins, after sprinkling the blood of the sheep or goat (a male without blemish) all around on the altar, then "the priest shall burn all on the altar as a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD." (Lev. 1:9 NKJV).

When God smells the sweet fragrance from the burnt offering, He forgives and blesses the worshipper. This is simply a shadow of the good things to come through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, not the very image of the things (Heb. 10:1).

Genesis 8:20-21 – NKJV
20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21 And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.

In response to the pleasing, soothing fragrance of Noah's burnt offerings, God blessed him and his sons and made a new covenant with Noah.

Genesis 9:1-3 – NKJV
1 So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
2 "And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand.
3 "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.

Likewise, Jacob received the firstborn's blessing, though he was not the firstborn of Isaac, by putting on the garments of Esau (the firstborn) and the skins of the young goats on his hands and neck so that he might smell like Esau.

Genesis 27:15-16 – NKJV
15 Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.
16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

Even though Isaac recognized Jacob's voice, he blessed him because he recognized the smell, for Jacob smelled like Esau, Isaac's firstborn.

Genesis 27:26-29 – NKJV
26 Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come near now and kiss me, my son."
27 And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said: "Surely, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field Which the LORD has blessed.
28 Therefore may God give you of the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine.
29 Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, and let your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be those who bless you!"

The rituals and sacrifices under the Old Covenant, as well as many notable events recorded in the Old Testament, are mere shadows, types, or representations of spiritual truths and realities under the New Covenant (Heb. 10:1).

God forgiving and blessing the worshippers because of smelling the soothing and pleasing fragrance of their burnt offerings is simply pointing to God's intent, plan, or purpose to forgive and bless all humanity because of being pleased with the soothing aroma or fragrance of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for the sins of the whole world (John 1:29, 1 John 2:2, 4:10).

Similarly, Isaac blessed Jacob with the blessing of the firstborn, which he did not deserve but got simply because Isaac was pleased with the way Jacob smelled as a result of him putting on the garments of Esau (the skins of the goats) points to the way God will bless the sinners, who don't deserve His blessings, simply because of the righteousness of His firstborn, Jesus Christ, bestowed upon them by their faith in the finished work of Christ (2 Cor. 5:21, Col. 1:18, Rev. 1:5).

God is infinitely more pleased with the soothing fragrance from Christ's sacrifice on the cross than He was with the fragrance from all the burnt offerings offered to Him under the Old Covenant.

So, suppose God could forgive and bless people under the Old Covenant by smelling the fragrance from their burnt offerings, which are only mere shadows or types of Christ's atoning sacrifice. How would God not freely forgive and bless people now because of the fragrance from Christ's perfect sacrifice on the cross?

When Jacob put on the garments of Esau (Isaac's firstborn), he smelled like the firstborn in the presence of Isaac, their father, and thus obtained the blessing of the firstborn, which he didn't deserve.

Likewise, every born-again believer has been clothed with the garments of salvation and covered with the robe of righteousness of Christ, thereby smelling like Christ in God's presence. Consequently, the born-again believers have received the blessing of Christ, which they don't deserve (Isa. 61:10, 2 Cor. 5:21, Eph. 1:3).

Therefore, Paul called believers "the fragrance of Christ" in His epistles.

2 Corinthians 2:15 – NKJV
15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

If indeed you are born again through faith in Christ Jesus and His atoning sacrifice, you are now the fragrance of Christ to God, having been covered with the robe of righteousness of Christ, and God is well pleased with you just as He is well pleased with Christ (Eph. 1:6, Matt. 3:17, 17:5).

There is no difference between you and Christ in how you smell to Him as far as God is concerned. Having been united with the Lord Jesus Christ, you are now one spirit with Christ (1 Cor. 6:17), and as Christ is, so are you now in this world before God (1 John 4:17).

Although Isaac recognized Jacob's voice and the imperfection, he went ahead to bless him because of the soothing fragrance emanating from the garment that Jacob had put on his firstborn (Esau) and clothed himself with.

Similarly, being a fragrance of Christ to God does not imply that you have attained the moral perfection of Christ, but it does imply that you now have unlimited access to all that belongs to Christ. God has blessed you with blessings that belong to Christ because you smell like Christ to Him (1 Cor. 3:21-23, 2 Pet. 1:3).

Ephesians 1:3 – NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

That is what grace is all about! Hallelujah!

Beloved, God wants you to always approach Him with absolute confidence that He is well pleased with you in Christ, not because of your self-righteousness, performance, or good works, but because of the robe of righteousness of Christ that you have put on through your faith in Christ and His finished work.

Therefore, you should always pray to God in faith and with confidence, boldness, and assurance that God will answer your prayers as He would answer the prayers of Christ, for God sees and smells you in the robe of righteousness of Christ as Jesus Christ, His firstborn.

Moreover, you should always wield your spiritual authority boldly in this world as Christ did while He was in the world.

Friend, you are a sweet, soothing, and pleasing fragrance of Christ to God in this world. Therefore, arise today and spread Christ's sweet and soothing aroma everywhere you go.

Prayer:

My Dear Heavenly Father, I am so glad to know I am a sweet and soothing fragrance of Christ to You. Dear Holy Spirit, teach and help me always spread Christ's fragrance in this world, in Jesus' name. Amen.

PUT AWAY THE REMAINS OF THE OLD MAN

"So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves." (James 1:21-22 NLT)

When a man dies, his spirit departs, leaving behind his physical body or remains for his family to put away, bury, or cremate. But if a man's dead body is left unattended after a short time, it will decompose and exude a repulsive stench and thus become a nuisance to all.

The longer a man's dead body stays unattended, the greater the stench emanating from it and the discomfort it will cause all the people around it.

Similarly, today, many born-again believers' stench or repulsive character comes from the old man's remains lingering on unattended in their souls (will, mind, and emotions).

The longer the old man's remains linger on in your mind, the greater the stench of the old man that will ooze out of your emotions, thoughts, speech, conduct, character, or lifestyle.

You have become a new creation or self in Christ through the new birth.

What happened to your old man or old self?

He was put to death and crucified with Christ!

The Scripture amply affirms this truth.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – RSV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.

Romans 6:6 – NKJV
6 Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

Galatians 5:24 – BBE
24 And those who are Christ's have put to death on the cross the flesh with its passions and its evil desires.

Colossians 3:3 – TCNT
3 For you died, and your Life now lies hidden, with the Christ, in God.

According to Scripture, the old man's life was snuffed out, extinguished, or put out at the Cross. Therefore, the old man is no longer alive in you; he is dead and gone. You are now a new man in Christ, not with the old man's sinful nature and life but with God's holy nature and life. Hallelujah!

Why are many born-again believers today still manifesting the old man's life, nature, or character as though the old man is still alive in them?

Because of their unwillingness, slackness, or laziness to properly deal with or put away the remains of the old man left behind in their souls (will, mind, and emotions)!

Although Christ has terminated the old man's life at the Cross, you still have to deal with or put away his remains in your mind.

If you fail to properly put away the old man's remains or the body of sin in your mind, you will continue to exude the stench of the old man in your thoughts, speech, emotions, conduct, or behavior.

Paul clearly states this truth.

Romans 6:6 – BBE
6 Being conscious that our old man was put to death on the cross with him so that the body of sin might be put away, and we might no longer be servants to sin.

If you don't put away the body of sin or the old man's remains in your will, mind, and emotions, you will continue to be an enslaved person or servant to sin. This is the problem of many believers today!

What, then, is the body of sin or the old man's remains left behind in your will, mind, and emotions that you must adequately deal with or put away completely?

Like your physical human body, the body of sin consists of many members!

Therefore, the Scripture commands you to "put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry." (Col. 3:5 NKJV).

The body of sin comprises all the sinful desires or fleshly passions, selfish ambitions, and worldly mindsets that have been entrenched or firmly fixed in your soul (will, mind, and emotions) before you became born-again.

All that the old man taught, infused, or instilled in your will, mind, and emotions before Christ put him to death can be referred to as "self" or "selfishness." That is what you have to deal with!

Before his life was snuffed out through the cross of Christ, the old man has successfully taught, trained, educated, or programmed you to be selfish or self-centered, to think only about yourself, to seek after only your pleasures, to pursue only your selfish ambitions or dreams, to trust in your self-righteousness, to rely or depend only upon yourself, and to live only for yourself.

Seeking to love, obey, or serve the Lord Jesus with the same mind that has been previously taught, trained, programmed, or set on pleasing" self" by the corrupt old man who once lived in you will always result in confusion, friction, frustration, and failure in your Christian life.

Your mind is crucial in your spiritual walk; it is the seat of your intellect, knowledge, reasoning, perception, judgment, emotions, and feelings. Therefore, if your mind is renewed according to the words or teaching of Christ, it will allow you to obey and follow Jesus Christ closely (Rom. 12:2, Jam. 1:21)!

How do you put away the body of sin or the old man's remains left behind in your will, mind, and emotions?

By renewing your mind according to the words or teaching of Christ!

Renewing your mind is a continuous process of identifying and putting off the remains of the old man (your former selfish mindsets, values, principles, patterns, or ways of life) in your mind and understanding and putting on the attitudes, values, principles, practices, and ways of life of Christ in your mind (Eph. 4:22-24).

You put off and discard the ways of life of your former unregenerate self by constantly reading, listening to, studying, imbibing, and meditating on the words or teachings of Jesus Christ, also by yielding yourself to, relying, or depending upon the Holy Spirit (the Divine Helper) sent by Christ to indwell you and abide with you forever (John 14:16-17).

Putting away the old man's remains or the body of sin in your mind is your personal and primary responsibility as a born-again believer. You cannot shirk this responsibility for another person.

The Scripture commands you to do this.

Romans 12:2 – RSV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Ephesians 4:22 – KJV
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Beloved, be diligent in putting away the old man's remains in your mind by renewing your mind according to Christ's teaching, and as you do so, the old man's repulsive stench will cease to ooze out of your life.

Arise and get to work today, putting off self and putting on Christ in your soul (will, mind, and emotions) by constantly beholding the glory of Jesus Christ in the mirror of God's Word. It won't be long before you cease to exude the repulsive stench of the old man's remains and then begin to exude the fragrance of Christ.

Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for crucifying my depraved old man with You. Dear Holy Spirit, teach and help me daily to remove the old man's remains that linger in my will, mind, and emotions, so that I may cease to exude his repulsive stench and begin to exude the sweet fragrance of Christ, in Jesus' name. Amen.
