Fulbright Alumni Spotlight: Mr. Bevan Narinesingh
He currently serves as Executive Director of the Fair Trading Commission of Trinidad and Tobago, where he leads the national competition authority whose mandate is promote, maintain and protect fair competition in the local economy. In 2005, Mr. Narinesingh was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship in Development Economics and Trade, which enabled him to pursue a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Trade Law at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law.
His time as a Fulbright Scholar proved to be one of the defining experiences of his academic and professional journey. In addition to deepening his understanding of international trade, economic development, and public policy, the programme exposed him to diverse perspectives and strengthened his appreciation for the role of law and institutions in advancing economic and social development.
While at the University of Arizona, Mr. Narinesingh was awarded the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in International Trade Law and Policy. Presented by the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI), the award is given to the highest-performing student in a course at an accredited United States law school and recognized his outstanding academic achievement in the study of International Trade Law and Policy.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Narinesingh credits the Fulbright Programme with broadening his outlook beyond national boundaries and strengthening his commitment to public service, regional cooperation, and evidence-based policymaking. The programme reinforced the importance of international collaboration, strong institutions, and leadership in addressing complex development challenges.
His commitment to service has also extended to vulnerable communities. As part of the King's College London Trinidad and Tobago Alumni Chapter, he participates in the King's Global Day of Service. Mr. Narinesingh was also part of a team that developed an educational support initiative for migrant children attending the Hispanic Learning Centre in South Trinidad. The project sought to improve access to education for migrant children by providing funding, instructional resources, and more accessible learning materials.
A passionate believer in education and mentorship, Mr. Narinesingh has served as a mentor through the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Mentoring Scheme, supporting students as they navigate academic and professional development opportunities.
His commitment to higher education is further reflected through his involvement with The University of the West Indies (UWI). He currently serves as Chair of the UWI Alumni Association of Trinidad and Tobago's Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series and has participated in initiatives supporting student scholarships and bursaries, including presenting awards on behalf of UWI Distinguished Alumni.
Mr. Narinesingh regards the Fulbright Scholarship as one of the most influential opportunities of his life and remains grateful for the doors it opened, the relationships it fostered, and the lasting impact it has had on his personal and professional development. He hopes to continue using the knowledge, skills, and networks gained through the Fulbright Program to contribute to national, regional, and community development.
