Three classes. Complete beginners. And they made these. ✂️

For many of our students, the first day starts with learning how to control a sewing machine — and by the end of our Beginner Bootcamp, they’re wearing something they made themselves.

Different fabrics. Different personalities. Different finished pieces. But they all started in the same place: as beginners.

You don’t need to already know how to sew to start learning. You just need somewhere to start.

Want to see the beginner-friendly ways you can learn with us?

Comment BEGINNER below and we’ll send the options straight to your DMs. ✂️

Sometimes the best first step is the one you take together. ✂️🤍

This mother-daughter duo joined us to learn something new together and left with new sewing skills, finished garments, and proof that you really can start from scratch.

Neither of them knew how to sew when they started. But with patient guidance, practice, and a willingness to try, they went from learning the machine to creating something they could actually wear.

And hearing them say they’d talked about learning to sew for so long but kept putting it off? We know there are so many people who can relate.

If sewing is something you’ve always wanted to learn, maybe this is your sign to finally take that first step. 🫶🏾

They came to us as absolute beginners. Now they’re making clothes they can actually wear.

For many of our students, their first stitches at Taylor M Academy are literally on paper. No sewing experience. No expectation that they should already know what they’re doing.

Then comes learning the machine, sewing on fabric, understanding garment construction, making mistakes, correcting them and eventually that moment when they can say, “I made this.”

That’s the kind of progress we want our students to experience.

Our Beginner Sewing Classes in Trinidad & Tobago is designed to give complete beginners the foundation, guidance and hands-on practice to start sewing with confidence.

If you’ve been saying you want to learn to sew but don’t know where to start, start here.

Comment BEGINNER or send us a DM for details on our next intake.

Thread bunching up underneath your fabric? That’s called a bird’s nest and I know exactly how frustrating this is when you’re starting out!

When your top thread has no tension on it, the machine pulls all that slack down underneath. So the mess shows up at the bottom, but the problem is most times at the top

Four things to check ⬇️

1. Your machine is threaded wrong. Usually the thread missed the take-up lever. Don’t fix it halfway, take it out and rethread the whole thing from the spool, with your presser foot up.

2. Your presser foot is up while you’re sewing. No foot down, no tension on your top thread.

3. You didn’t hold your thread tails. If it only nests right at the start of a seam, this is your answer.

4. Your tension is set too low. Everybody runs to this dial first and it’s usually not the problem buttttt if it’s sitting at a low number between zero- two, that’ll do it.

And if you’ve checked all four and it’s still nesting, then go and look at your bobbin.

Save this for the next time your machine acts up 📌

The easiest way to pick fabric as a beginner: don’t choose it just because it’s pretty but watch how it behaves.

A stable fabric stays where you put it. Cut it, it stays cut. Pin it, it doesn’t shift while you sew. That’s the whole difference between a project that comes out clean and one that fights you the whole way & trust and believe that you don’t want that fight. It can be quite demotivating for a beginner

Beginner-friendly: cotton, poplin, linen, chambray.

Leave for later: satin, chiffon, slinky knits, plaid.

None of them are bad fabrics. They’re just asking more of you than you need to give when now starting.

Save this before your next trip to the fabric store 📌

The students who progress fastest aren’t the ones with natural talent. 🧵

They’re the ones who took the boring parts seriously.

We’ve watched enough beginners now to see the pattern. The ones who rush past the fundamentals hit a wall around week three, their pieces don’t line up, their seams pull, and they can’t work out why. Usually it traces back to something that happened before the machine was ever switched on.

Accurate cutting. Proper machine control. Knowing where your needle is going before you press the pedal.

None of it looks impressive on camera. All of it determines whether your finished garment looks made or homemade.

We build this in from day one because skipping it costs you more time later than it saves you now.
