East Indians first arrived in Trinidad many years ago, in May.
The first country in the world to celebrate this event with a holiday.

The journey was hard, long and many suffered on the trip;
As they travelled from India to Trinidad on the Fatel Razack ship.

They became indentured labourers, and faced harsh living conditions.
They toiled for long hours, working on sugar plantations.

They brought with them their food, dress, music, dance and religion.
Their arrival enriched the diverse culture of this nation.
