Problem solving can be a real problem for most. This is the first of a few post with some pointers to help you along.

Save the chart and use it as a guide when tacking problems (in mathematics and real life).

FIRST STEP: Understand the problem. Spend time on this because it is one of the most important. Think, what is the question asking? Do I understand the words or the terminology in the question? If you do not know what a word means chances are that you will not understand what the question is asking you to do. MOST mathematical operations (like add, subtract, multiply or even square, factorize, etc) have words or scenarios that are cleverly placed in the problem as hints, your task is to identify them.

So, the time a teacher or a book spends explaining why this topic is needed or how it was derived, (you know, the history behind it), this is REALLY helpful in decoding mathematical problems.
