10-YEAR-OLD WRITES CSEC EXAMS WHILE PREPARING FOR SEA

Eme Eton has not yet done the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) exam, but she is already attempting exams at a more advanced level.

On April 17, the ten-year-old St Joseph’s Girls’ RC School student confidently made her way onto the St Augustine Secondary School compound as a private candidate, and did the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate CSEC Spanish paper three exam. She will be doing papers one and two in May, as well as History in June.

She told Guardian Media she likes to challenge herself and felt this was a novel way to see how far she could push her pre-teen mind.

“I wanted to try something new to test myself, and I do enjoy History.”

She is confident that she will be successful because she has and continues to put in the work.

Great minds never truly die, her contributions will continue to live on for many more generations to come. This too is the potential of every educated mind. Rest In Power 🕊

Dr. Gladys West, the brilliant mathematician whose groundbreaking work helped make modern GPS technology possible, has died at 95.

Born on a Virginia farm during the Jim Crow era, West defied the odds through academic excellence, becoming valedictorian of her high school class and earning degrees in mathematics that led her to a historic career at the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

As one of the first Black women hired there, her meticulous calculations and programming transformed satellite data into accurate models of the Earth — work that became the foundation of GPS technology used globally today.

Her legacy lives on every time we navigate a road, board a plane, or use a smartphone. A quiet pioneer whose impact changed the world.

Rest in power!

“Children have higher academic success and greater chances in life when they regularly read stories or novels outside of school. Reading for pleasure is also an activity that has emotional and social consequences.
“Children with access to libraries and books of their own enjoy reading more, and read more frequently. The more books in a house, the higher the child’s attainment. Choice is an important factor, since it creates interest, but the most important factor in getting children onto that path is the parent or guardian.
“Adult input and home environment are essential in the early teaching of reading and to foster a love of reading. Telling children stories and reading along with them while quite young – from pre-toddler age – is the secret to future reading and writing ability and reading enjoyment, not least because age affects attitudes to reading and reading behaviour.”

The photo of Mr. Alejandro Navarro has become a powerful and heartbreaking symbol of the dedication teachers show to their students. Despite being in the hospital and just hours away from passing, he was still grading assignments to ensure his class wouldn’t fall behind. He died the following day, making his final act one of service and responsibility to others.

His story has resonated far beyond Texas, sparking global conversations about the unseen sacrifices educators make every day. It highlights the extreme lengths teachers often go to, sometimes at the cost of their own health and well-being, to prioritize their students. At the same time, it has reignited discussions about systemic issues like burnout, lack of support, and the heavy emotional weight carried by those in the profession.
