🌟 PREFIXES: A KEY SKILL FOR SEA & BEYOND! 📚✨

Good afternoon parents! 🌸

As our students continue to develop their vocabulary and Language Arts skills, it is important that they understand prefixes and how they can change the meaning of words.

This resource is especially useful for our SEA-level students, but it is also highly beneficial for our Standard 3s and Form 1 students as they continue building a strong foundation in vocabulary, comprehension and language skills. 💡

Students will learn:
📖 What a prefix is
🔤 Common prefixes and their meanings
✏️ How to add prefixes correctly to root words
🧠 How prefixes can help determine the meaning of unfamiliar words
🎯 How to apply prefixes when answering vocabulary and comprehension questions

Understanding prefixes is an important skill because it allows students to break unfamiliar words into smaller parts and use those parts to work out meaning.

For our SEA students, this can be particularly helpful in Vocabulary, Comprehension and Language Arts. For our Standard 3s and Form 1s, it provides an excellent foundation that they can continue building upon as they progress academically. 🌟

Encourage your child to look carefully at the word parts, identify the prefix, think about its meaning, and use context clues when necessary.

✨📚 CREATIVE WRITING – STORY STARTERS! ✍️🌟

Ready to spark your child’s imagination and take their creative writing to the next level? 💭📖

These 100 Story Starters are a wonderful resource to help students develop their creativity, descriptive writing skills and confidence when creating stories. From mysterious situations and exciting adventures to dramatic weather and unexpected events, each starter provides an engaging way to begin a story. 🌟

🎯 Why are Story Starters Important?

A strong story starter can help you HOOK THE READER from the very beginning! 🪝📖

Your opening sentences should make the reader curious and encourage them to keep reading. Instead of starting with a simple statement such as:

❌ “It was a scary night.”

Try using SHOW, DON’T TELL:

✨ “The wind howled outside my window as thunder shook the walls. I pulled the blanket tightly around me and listened to the strange scratching sound coming from downstairs.”

The second example shows the reader that the night is frightening through actions, sounds and descriptions rather than simply telling them that it is scary. 👀✨

💡 Remember:
DON’T JUST TELL YOUR READER HOW A CHARACTER FEELS — SHOW THEM!

Instead of:
❌ “I was nervous.”

Try:
✨ “My hands trembled as beads of sweat trickled down my forehead. I swallowed hard and stared at the mysterious door.”

This makes your writing more vivid, descriptive and engaging and allows the reader to imagine the scene for themselves. 🌟

📝 When using these story starters, think about:

📍 Setting – Where and when is the jstory taking place?
👤 Characters – Who is involved?
⚡ Conflict – What problem or challenge will arise?
👀 Description – What can the characters see, hear, smell, taste and feel?
🪝 Hook – How will you grab your reader’s attention?
💭 Show, Don’t Tell – How can you show feelings and events through actions, senses and description?
📖 Plot – What happens next, and how will the story develop and end?

Remember, there is no single “right” story when it comes to Creative Writing. Take the starter, let your imagination run wild, and turn those few words into an exciting story of your own! 🌈✍️
