Summary of the CXC SBA Reforms

The reforms divide CSEC and CAPE subjects into three groups, depending on whether the current SBA arrangements will remain, the use of SBA will increase, or Alternate Paper 032 will become the assessment option.

CSEC Changes
Group 1 — SBA retained

There will be no changes to the existing assessment requirements for:

Agricultural Science; Family and Resource Management; Food, Nutrition and Health; French; Industrial Technology; Music; Physical Education and Sport; Portuguese; Spanish; Technical Drawing; Textiles, Clothing and Fashion; and Visual Arts.

Group 2 — Increased use of SBA

From the May–June 2028 examinations, candidates will be required to complete the SBA. Alternate Paper 032 will no longer be offered for:

Biology; Chemistry; Electronic Document Preparation and Management; Geography; Integrated Science; Physics; and Theatre Arts.

Group 3 — Alternate Paper 032

According to the notice:

From May–June 2027, either the SBA or Alternate Paper 032 will be accepted.
From May–June 2028, only Alternate Paper 032 will be offered.

This applies to:

Additional Mathematics; Caribbean History; Economics; English A; English B; Human and Social Biology; Information Technology; Mathematics; Office Administration; Principles of Accounts; Principles of Business; Religious Education; and Social Studies.

CAPE Changes
Group 1 — SBA retained

There will be no changes to the existing assessment requirements for:

Agricultural Science; Animation and Game Design; Art and Design; Building and Mechanical Engineering Drawing; Design and Technology; Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology; Food and Nutrition; French; Performing Arts; Physical Education and Sport; and Spanish.

From the May–June 2027 examinations, candidates will be required to complete the SBA. Alternate Paper 032 will no longer be offered for:

Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Digital Media; Environmental Science; Geography; Green Engineering; and Physics.

Group 3 — Alternate Paper 032

From the May–June 2027 examinations, only Alternate Paper 032 will be offered for:

Accounting; Applied Mathematics; Caribbean Studies; Communication Studies; Economics; Entrepreneurship; Financial Services Studies; History; Information Technology; Integrated Mathematics; Law; Literatures in English; Logistics and Supply Chain Operations; Management of Business; Pure Mathematics; Sociology; and Tourism.

Main effect of the reforms

The changes are intended to standardize how candidates are assessed:

Some subjects will keep their existing SBA requirements.
Some will become SBA-only, meaning candidates must have access to supervised coursework and assessment.
Others will move to Alternate Paper 032, replacing the SBA requirement for those subjects.
Most CAPE changes begin in May–June 2027, while some CSEC changes are phased in between May–June 2027 and May–June 2028.
