đź’» When power arrives through software

At CCGI's 6th Global Conference, Mikey Thackoor, Founder and Principal Consultant of Zero Gravity Consultancy, considered what AI sovereignty means for the Caribbean.

Imported systems carry embedded assumptions, values and priorities. If the region does not govern the tools it adopts, digital dependency can quietly shape decisions, opportunities and outcomes.

🛡️ Cyber risk belongs in the boardroom

During CCGI's 6th Global Conference, Dr. Pradeep Chaturvedi, Vice President of the Institute of Directors India, addressed the strategic importance of cybersecurity.

Cyber threats place data, intellectual property, infrastructure and corporate reputation at risk. Treating cybersecurity solely as an IT responsibility leaves boards unprepared for threats that can affect organisational continuity and national interests.

🌍 Governing through uncertainty

At CCGI's 6th Global Conference, Prof. Bob Garratt, CCGI's Global Ambassador and author of The Fish Rots from the Head, examined what boardroom readiness requires in an unpredictable world.

Boards cannot anticipate every geopolitical shock, but they can scan the horizon, protect the organisation and keep moving forward responsibly. Effective governance demands both strategic momentum and prudent control.

đź” Build boards for what comes next

Kantha Naicker, Founder of GovernEx and CEO of the Africa Future Foresight Institute, challenged leaders at CCGI's 6th Global Conference to reconsider how boards respond to change.

Resilient boards do more than recover from disruption. They use foresight, reliable information and informed curiosity to shape stronger outcomes before emerging risks become crises.

Is your board protecting yesterday's model or preparing for tomorrow's reality?

🧩 Build public boards around competence

At the Effectively Onboarding Directors in the Public Sector session, Nophia Morgan, Director of the Public Body Board Secretariat within Jamaica's Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, explained how a transparent database supports director selection.

Matching applicants to board-specific competencies broadens the talent pool and makes the process more consistent and accountable. Strong onboarding begins with choosing people whose capabilities fit the organisation they are appointed to govern.

Better boards start before the appointment letter.

⚖️ Competence must outweigh political loyalty

During the Effectively Onboarding Directors in the Public Sector session, Jason Farley, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Guyana National Shipping Corporation Limited, spoke candidly about appointments to state boards.

A director may be qualified yet still be the wrong fit for a particular organisation. When political loyalty outweighs competency, boards lose the ability to provide meaningful challenge, guidance and oversight.

The quality of a board begins with the quality of its appointment decisions.
