What happens when there is a disagreement at the board level?

All organisations that are well run have disagreements.

The challenge is when the disagreement gets into the realm of conflict. How do members decide on the best way to manage this and resolve the issue amicably?

This is where Board Charters and Board Manuals are crucial. They contain the major rules by which the organisation is to be governed and helps in taking the conflict out of personal and subjective views into an area of impartial guidance.

Join the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute for this half day workshop on developing board manuals and board charters. Register at https://www.caribbeangovernance.org/event-5620802

We have a global expert in Alison Dillon Kibirige who will offer her insights in this workshop on Tuesday April 9, 2024.

Non-executive directors sometimes carry the major responsibility of ensuring effectiveness of the corporate governance practices in an organisation.

This is because they don't have the relationships that can potentially compromise interest of stakeholders. And they are expected to ask the probing questions to ensure that policies and strategies are in place to steer the organisation towards growth.

Yet, the concern has also been expressed that non-executive directors sometimes don't know enough about the business to add much value.

Register now for Part 2 of our Role of the Board series as we focus on the Role of the Non-Executive Director.

As we move towards our 5th annual Governance Week, the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute (CCGI) would like to welcome The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited as a sponsor for the first time.

is the signature event for us at CCGI and we are pleased to have had some of the most influential minds in open our workshops. These include Professor R 'Bob' Garratt who delivered the Opening Keynote for our inaugural conference and is not CCGI's Global Ambassador. We were delighted to have Professor Mervyn King SC whose work in the King Report continues to inspire change around the world. We have also had two amazing women Professor Charlotte Valeur and Nandi Mandela, granddaughter of the great Nelson Mandela.

This year we are thrilled to have John Elkington as our Opening Keynote. As a lecturer, I have been citing Elkington (1994) for the work he did in developing the Triple Bottom Line model of People, Planet and Profit. We have all met Black Swan events with the Covid-19 pandemic, Prof Elkington has been writing about Green Swans.

is a major success factor of an effective market. It means that organisations must expect to deal with each other with .

This is not always the case in reality, and it may simply be because managers and directors have different and so differ in their concept of what is right and what is wrong.

As a result most countries have that governs the market place. And because we know that having the law is not enough, there are also Fair Trading Commissions in place to help monitor practices and enforce the law.

Register now at https://lnkd.in/ehJYH7Fy

And hear from the Fair Trading Commission, The Trinidad and Tobago Fair Trading Commission and the Fair Trading Commission Barbados on how your practices may be putting your organisation at risk.

Join Bevan Narinesingh, Troy Waterman PhD, PMP, David Miller and moderator Ronald Ramkissoon Ph.D. for what promises to be a very enlightening panel.

Directors who serve on multiple boards can be at risk when dealing with compliance law and fair trade.

Effective Corporate governance requires that board members be aware of potential risks that can occur in carrying out their monitoring function as there can be serious consequences, including being in breach of statutory duties; and consequences for the reputation of the organisation.

Happening now! What a spirited discussion on how to get more women on boards - I learned about the "golden skirts" from Joanne G. Salazar; and was impressed with the passion of Lyndell Danzie-Black.

Definitely there are so many options, but as the panel is currently sharing, no matter the strategy, so long as there is one - we are seeing some success
