Reading, writing, and speaking all come from the same place: a 15-skill developmental hierarchy that starts before kindergarten and keeps building into adulthood.

At the base, a child learns to make each sound and tell it apart from similar ones, using four senses together: sight, hearing, feeling where the sound is made in the mouth, and feeling how the mouth moves to make it. From there, the brain builds up through letters, decoding, spelling, reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension, speaking, listening, even math, all the way to executive function at the top.

For most people, this happens automatically. For people with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, the foundation isn't solid, and that gap doesn't close on its own with age.

Most tutoring programs start above the foundation, usually with letters and phonics. Phonics programs are built on reading-only information: they change reading skills, and nothing else. NOW! Phonics-only programs aren't wrong, they're just narrow.

At their best, phonics programs teach sound-letter rules and decoding strategies. That's valuable. But it assumes a student already has the underlying sound-processing skills in place, phoneme perception, phoneme production, phonological awareness, to build on.

For a lot of kids (especially many 5- and 6-year-olds), that foundation isn't there yet. So the phonics lessons don't stick, no matter how many times they're repeated. It's not a motivation problem or an effort problem, it's a foundation problem.
