HISTORIC SUPER EL NIÑO

The Niño 1+2 region (near the coast of Ecuador) has already surpassed the historical record, with temperature anomalies of +4.8°C. Forecasts indicate that anomalies could exceed +6°C by October.

Meanwhile, El Niño is projected to become the strongest on record by the end of September.
What does this mean for the Caribbean and Central America?

Less rainfall, continued drought, and it is very likely that this will be the least active Atlantic hurricane season on record.

I’ll share more details later this afternoon in a video.

EL NIÑO FUELS PACIFIC TROPICAL ACTIVITY

El Niño continues to fuel an unusually active pattern across the eastern Pacific, with exceptionally warm ocean waters helping to support several powerful tropical cyclones.

Hurricane Karina is packing maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, Hurricane Marie has winds of 100 mph, while Major Hurricane Lowell is the strongest of the three with maximum winds of 125 mph.

The NHC is also monitoring an area of low pressure well offshore of southwestern Mexico, where gradual development is possible early next week. The system has a 50% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over seven days, while remaining well offshore of Mexico.

The exceptionally warm El Niño waters across the Pacific are providing additional energy for tropical systems. In contrast, El Niño typically increases wind shear across the Atlantic, which can suppress hurricane development there.

For the Caribbean, El Niño can bring hotter and drier conditions, reducing rainfall in some areas and increasing the risk of drought. This creates a striking contrast between the active Pacific and generally less favorable Atlantic environment.

HEAT INFORMATION STATEMENT FOR BARBADOS

Issued: Thu, 3 Sep 2026 03:57 PM

Hot conditions have been observed across the island over the past few months. These conditions are expected to persist throughout September and into October.

Possible Impacts
The general public, especially vulnerable individuals and outdoor workers, should be prepared for the possibility of severe heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke, or fainting.

What you should do
Residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates. Additionally, advice and warnings provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness and other relevant authorities should be followed. Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours.

Discussion
Daytime maximum temperatures from weather stations across some southern, eastern and northern districts have been peaking between 32C and 33C while some western and urban areas are recording temperatures in the mid 30s and apparent temperatures around 45C. Warmer than average nighttime temperatures are doing very little to relieve this discomfort. While occasional shower activity may bring some temporary relief with moderate breezes from time to time, these high temperatures are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the heat season (September into November).

General Information
This heat information statement was issued at 4pm on 3rd September 2026. For more information specific to your area, please visit https://www.barbadosweather.org, our social media pages or call our hotline at 976-2376 or the office at 535-0022.

EL NIÑO STRENGTHENS: NEAR 100% CHANCE OF A VERY STRONG EVENT THROUGH EARLY 2027

El Niño is now firmly established across the tropical Pacific and is expected to strengthen considerably over the coming months, with forecasts indicating a near 100% likelihood that the event will persist through February 2027.

Exceptionally warm ocean temperatures across the tropical Pacific are helping to fuel this developing event. Current projections suggest El Niño could reach very strong intensity and potentially peak toward the end of 2026, making it one of the major climate signals to watch as we head into the final months of the year.

For September through November 2026, WMO multi-model forecasts indicate a strong likelihood of above-normal temperatures across much of the world's land areas. At the same time, El Niño is expected to significantly influence rainfall patterns, increasing the potential for unusual weather conditions, including drought, flooding and periods of extreme heat in different parts of the world.

For Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, the strengthening El Niño could influence rainfall and temperature patterns during the months ahead. However, the impacts will not be identical everywhere. Local conditions will depend on the season, location and interaction with other climate drivers.

With El Niño intensifying, monitoring rainfall, temperature and drought conditions will become increasingly important.

National meteorological agencies and the WMO are increasing preparedness and early-warning efforts as the possibility of a very strong event becomes more certain.

Mora’s Weather Network HD will continue monitoring the evolution of El Niño and what it could mean for Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean in the months ahead.
