Deyrulzafaran, built in 493 AD on top of an old Sun Temple (known as Dayro D-Zafaran i.e the Saffron Monastery) is located outside Mardin, Tur Abdin. It is also known by the name 'Mor Hananyo Monastery" after its founder Saint Annanias (Hananyo). It was the official seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchs between 1160-1932. This monastery is historically the most significant in the Syriac Orthodox Church. It created the most scholars and teached Aramaic scholars all over Mesopotamia.

Syriac Orthodox Bishop of Mardin Mor Philoxenous Yuhanon Dolabani, (1885 Qelit, Mardin Tur Abdin - 1969 Deyrulzafaran, Mardin)

He is holy and noble and impossible to describe in words, this man had a pen of gold and a diamond brain!

Dolabani is considered a national hero for the Aramean people and for the Syriac church. He is one of the greatest Syriac scholars in the 20th century and is famous for his great knowledge in Syriac and his very large amount of literal works such as self written books, translation of books and beautiful nationalistic poems.

He wrote in his last article in the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchal Magazine just a week before he passed away "I don't want death to break my pen, because the Church and our youth still needs my pen, but may God's will be done"

Today Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church is behinning his journey to Iraq. This visit is meant to give hope to the Christians of Iraq, i.e The various Syriac christian groups such as Chaldeans, Syriac Catholic Arameans, Syriac Orthodox Arameans and the Assyrians.

He starts in Baghdad and will meet with political officials, as is customary, before meeting with Catholic clergy and seminarians at Our Lady of Salvation, the Syriac Catholic church where an attack in 2010 killed more than 50 people.

he will visit the Plain of Ur, which tradition holds was the home of Abraham, the patriarch of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Francis will deliver a speech there and then return to Baghdad, where he will celebrate Mass at the Chaldean Church.

The pope will afterwards visit Mosul, a once religiously diverse city that has been laid to waste by war and by the Islamic State’s occupation of part of Iraq. Francis will deliver a prayer for war victims in the city’s Church Square.

He will then visit the Syriac Christian areas in the Nineveh plains, the towns of Qaraqosh and Bartella.

This visit will hopefully plant hope in the hearts of the christians of Iraq, our people.
