This studio, titled “Escapecore: Body – Unit – Community,” explores architecture through the fundamental human need for shelter and retreat. Following ARCH 101, students engage in a three-phase process: analyzing architectural language, designing a singular “Escape/Refuge” capsule based on anthropometry, and finally aggregating these units into an ecological community in sites like Koramaz Valley. The course emphasizes the transition between scales—from the human body to environmental contexts—while fostering spatial literacy through hands-on making, technical drawing, and iterative physical modeling.

This studio, titled “A Community-Centric Educational Hub in Sahabiye,” investigates morphology as the primary driver for spatial relationships between form, function, and users. The methodology focuses on the “learning through production” philosophy of the Village Institutes (Köy Enstitüleri), specifically referencing Pazarören as a foundational model. Students are challenged to translate this legacy into the dense urban fabric of Kayseri’s Sahabiye Neighborhood. By exploring functional morphology, proposals must move beyond conventional classrooms to create high-performance architectural wholes that integrate thematic workshops, universal accessibility, and environmental resilience into a cohesive spatial logic.

Centered on the theme “Transportation Hub as Third Space,” this studio engages with a critical urban node in Kayseri’s city center where historical and modern mobility layers converge. Moving beyond functional networks, the project treats transportation as a spatial organization that redefines the relationship between public space and the public sphere. A primary focus is the integration of the underground bazaar and future light rail systems as active public layers, explored through vertical spatial continuity. Students develop trans-scale architectural arguments that address climatic performance and social encounters, framing the hub as a metropolitan artifact embedded in urban life.

This capstone studio, titled “CiviCore,” focuses on developing architectural proposals that position governance, public interaction, and collective life as fundamental spatial questions. Architecture is approached as a civic act embedded within the urban fabric of Kayseri’s historic core. Through rigorous site analysis and theoretical readings, students investigate how spatial design can make civic participation visible and support hybrid forms of public life. The studio encourages a critical engagement with urban memory, questioning how architecture can operate as a medium for collective processes and contemporary civic needs rather than simply producing a finished physical form.
