The Travelers in Ottoman Lands: Places forgotten, Places remembered (TIOL3) Conference took place between 9 and 12 April 2025 in Istanbul. It was a wonderful event filled with interesting presentations and keynote lectures at the ANAMED Auditorium and the Minerva Han in Beyoğlu and excursions to the Feriköy Protestant Cemetery and the tulip gardens of Emirgan Korusu.

From February 28 to March 28, 2025, the photography exhibition "Through the Lens of Emilie Haspels. The Phrygian Highlands 1937-1958" ["Emilie Haspels’in Gözünden. Dağlık Frigya 1937-1958"] will be showcased at the Eti Archaeology Museum in Eskişehir.

On December 16, 2024, Dr. Friso Hoeneveld (University of Amsterdam) gave a lecture entitled Egbert Kreiken: How a Dutch Globetrotter Became a Turk at Heart at Ankara University as a part of the celebrations commemorating the 100-year Friendship Treaty between the Netherlands and Türkiye.

Two options:
Residential Fellowships (apply by January 3): Free accommodation + library access for 4 weeks.

On 11 December 2024, Wednesday the book Constantinople through the Ages. The Visual City from Its Foundation to Contemporary Istanbul edited by Diederik Burgersdijk, Fokke Gerritsen and Willemijn Waal was launched at Spui25 in Amsterdam.

During the event, Kay Boers (Utrecht University), Fokke Gerritsen (NIT), Rolf Strootman (Utrecht University), Mariëtte Verhoeven (Radboud University), Willemijn Waal (Leiden University), Enno Maessen (Utrecht University) presented parts from the book and the following roundtable discussion was moderated by Diederik Burgersdijk (Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam and Humboldt University).

During the event, André Testa, of the Levantine family of dragomans and diplomats received the first copy of the book.

After a successful symposium, fruitful presentations, engaging discussions, and an exciting field trip since the beginning of the course in October, we have come to the last week of the Historic Ports, Future Cities: Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Urban Development Course.

At NIT Urban Heritage Lab this week, we leave the floor to our course participants. They will present their project proposals for the revalorization of Izmir's port city heritage. After the presentation of the project proposals, Dr. Ayşegül Altınörs Çırak (Dokuz Eylül Uni), Dr. Fatma Tanış (TUDelft), Dr. A. Güliz Bilgin Altınöz (METU), and Cezara Matei (Front la Dunăre) will evaluate and discuss these projects in a discussion session moderated by Dr. Özgün Özçakır (METU) and Dr. Fokke Gerritsen (NIT).

The fourth edition of the Urban Heritage Lab Autumn course is organized by the Netherlands Institute in Turkey (NIT), in collaboration with Middle East Technical University (METU), and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with the support of the Netherlands Consulate-General in Istanbul, the Historical Port City of Izmir Site Management Office, and TARKEM. The Historic Ports, Future Cities: Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Urban Development Course will focus on the cultural heritage of port cities.

You are invited to the NIT Day in Nijmegen on December 6, at 13:00 at Radboud University, Pavilion, Erasmuslaan 9, room 01.15.

On this day you can find out about the activities and programs of the Netherlands Institute in Turkey. You can listen to presentations by staff and fellows, hear from former fellows about their experiences in Istanbul and meet or reconnect with NIT staff and alumni. There is a special emphasis on projects carried out by or in collaboration with students and researchers of Radboud University.

The Netherlands Institute in Turkey fosters the academic study of Turkey through the ages. Governed by Leiden University and based in Istanbul, it serves all universities in the Netherlands. NIT initiates and conducts research and education programs in archaeology, heritage studies and Turkish studies. MA and PhD students can apply for fellowships to conduct research in Istanbul.
