A close shave = a close call = something (usually bad) nearly happened, but was avoided at the last minute

While I was riding my bike, a car nearly hit me. It was a really close shave, but I managed to brake in time! 🚴🚗

*** is your friend = you should do a certain thing

If you want to speak better English, practice is your friend.

If you want to be rich, gold is your friend

Excuse the morning voice in this video - I haven't had my sunny side up and kuru fasulye yet 🍳🥓

Today's topic: bok / s**t! 💩

Of course, these phrases are not polite. However, in the UK, we use swear words (küfür) pretty frequently outside of formal situations and you will come across them regularly on television. Enjoy!

Thanks
for all the help in understanding these phrases in Turkish

Some loose translations for you to help you get started on your journey to mastering s**t:

Aynı bok laciverti - same s**t

Boktan - Going to s**t (becoming s**tty)

Sıçtı Jafer bez getir - I s**t the bed

Etarafi bok götürüyor - It's becoming a s**thole

This is a kind of old fashioned way to avoid going out with someone you don't like - başka kapıya!

- Would you like to see my stamp collection on Saturday night?
- I can't, I am washing my hair

Did you know, in French, they say 'je ne peux pas, j'ai piscine' (I can't, I have swimming pool) to say the same thing. If you like this and want to learn more French phrases and slang, don't forget to sign up to our French classes!

Hold your horses is used when someone tries to do something to quickly (maybe without thinking or something they shouldn't be doing)

It originates from horse racing when at the start of the race you should control your horse before they open the gates

Don't worry, there is no violence against cats here 🐈 - a cat in this sentence means 'cat o'nine tails': dokuz kuyruklu kırbaç! On ships, there often wasn't enough room to swing a cat and we use it until this today to say somewhere is very small!

There wasn't enough room to swing a cat in Harry Potter's bedroom!

I hope you don't mind me using in Turkey we don't but under the circumstances 😂

Said on a daily basis in our house when I was kid - not sure if I was demanding or if my mum just liked the phrase 😂

When there isn't much money, we also often say 'feeling the pinch': Since COVID, we have all started to feel the pinch. Except for Kıymet who has cleverly invested in altın 😂😂

Normally we say this at the end of a list of things that you should do to get something done to say how easy it is

Örnek: To get to Kadiköy, turn left at the lights, right at the corner shop and, Bob's your uncle, you'r at the boğa!
