Australia is ranked the world’s seventh most accepting nation out of the 140 countries including in the survey (Iceland topped the list followed by New Zealand and Rwanda). A common thread tying many of the most-accepting countries together was a long history of receiving migrants. Those who were younger and more educated tended to be more accepting.
The index also showed that in the most welcoming countries both newcomer and long-term migrants are much more positive about their future than those in less-accepting nations.
For the first time the World Happiness Report this year ranked nations according to the happiness of their migrants, not just the overall population.
Australia’s migrant population was rated the world’s sixth happiest - even better than our overall 10th ranking on the global happiness league table.
Malcolm Turnbull likes to call Australia “the most successful multicultural society in the world”.
