Üsküdar Üniversitesi Tasavvuf Araştırmaları Enstitüsü öğretim üyelerinden Dr. Öğr. Üyesi F. Cangüzel Güner Zülfikar Berlin Humboldt Üniversitesi İslâm İlâhiyatı Enstitüsü öğretim üyesi Prof. Dr. Tûbâ Işık’ın davetlisi olarak “Tasavvuf: Sanat, Kültür ve Sinema” konusunda bir çalıştayda konuşacak.

Çalıştayda Sn. Nilgün Akıncı sinema konusunda görüşlerini paylaşacak.

Abstract

“Islamic Psychology and Theories of Personality”

What is Personality? How does it develop? What changes it and why do people have different personalities? This talk discusses Islamic theories of personality, while considering developments in modern psychology concerning genetic, environmental, learning, and unconscious factors that shape human personality.

Drawing on Islamic psychology, Sufism, philosophy, and science, it delves into the intricate and multifaceted relationship between body, soul, heart, and spirit and argues that the ideal personality depends on cultivating wisdom and spiritual intelligence.

Who is Muhammad U. Faruque?

Muhammad U. Faruque is the Inayat Malik Assistant Professor and a Taft Center Fellow at the University of Cincinnati.

He also holds a Visiting Scholar position at Harvard University. His highly acclaimed book Sculpting the Self (University of Michigan Press, 2021) addresses “what it means to be human” in a secular, post-Enlightenment world by exploring notions of selfhood and subjectivity in Islamic and non-Islamic literatures, including modern philosophy and neuroscience.

Dr. Faruque is the author of three books and over forty-five academic articles, which have appeared (or are forthcoming) in numerous peer-reviewed journals.

He gives public lectures on a wide range of topics such as climate change, AI, ethics, and selfhood. He is also a recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the prestigious Templeton Foundation Global Philosophy of Religion grant and the Title IV Grant, U.S. Dept. of Education.

Abstract
“The Extraordinary, Enchanted Journey of a Female Scholar Saint in the Afghan Empire”
At the turn of the 19th century, Bibi Sahiba Kalan (1752-1803), Kabul’s great female Sufi master and scholar, was recognized as the “most exalted saint” of the age.

Her network of thousands of disciples spanned the Arabian Sea to Central Asia. She was the spiritual guide of scholars, poets, and nobles, invited to Bukhara by the khan himself. She led a caravan to Mecca, and built and managed colleges and shrines at Kandahar, Yemen, and Sindh.

Bibi Sahiba’s sons and grandchildren – Sufi masters in their own right – defended Afghanistan in the Anglo-Afghan Wars. They expanded Bibi Sahiba’s spiritual network all the way to the Thar desert and Rajasthan, where at least fifteen great female saints were appointed as their successors - each with Muslim and Hindu disciples in the thousands.

These female saints are the subject of Prof. Waleed Ziad’s forthcoming book Sufi Masters of the Afghan Empire: Bibi Sahiba and her Sacred networks (Harvard 2024), based on fieldwork in five languages in several dozen towns and villages from the Thar desert to the Afghan-Pakistan borderlands to Central Asia.

Dr Ziad’s research overturns our assumptions on Muslim women’s empowerment before colonialism; His research indicates that Bibi Sahiba was one of many female religious leaders in what is today Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan from the 18th to 20th centuries.

Tasavvuf Araştırmaları Enstitüsü, Kyoto Üniversitesi, Asya ve Afrika Saha Araştırmaları Enstitüsü (Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies ASAFAS, Kenan Rifai Center for Sufi Studies) ile ortaklaşa Prof. Yasushi Tonaga yönetiminde “Comprehensive Study of Sufism: Through Metaphysics, Literature, Music and Rituals” (Kapsamlı bir Tasavvuf Araştırması: Tasavvuf Düşüncesi, Edebiyat, Müzik ve Ritüeller) başlıklı projeyi yürütmektedir.

Proje 6 yıl sürecek olup Japonya’nın bilimsel araştırmalara fon sağlayan, “The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)” adlı kuruluş tarafından desteklenmektedir.
Proje kapsamında 28 Ağustos 2023 tarihinde “Bridging Mystical Philosophy and Arts in Sufism: Poetry, Music and Sama’ Ritual” başlıklı Uluslararası Sempozyum düzenlenecektir.

Sempozyumda Türkçe ve İngilizce simultane tercüme yapılacaktır. Program halka açık olup aynı zamanda Üsküdar Üniversitesi TV’den canlı yayınlanacaktır.
