The Byzantine Studies Research Center of Bogazici University is pleased to announce the organization of its fourth seminar, titled “Entangling Byzantium: An Introduction to Historical Network Analysis,” conducted by Johannes Preiser-Kapeller (Institute for Medieval Research/Department of Byzantine Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences), to be held ONLINE on 10 May 2024.

This seminar will provide both an overview of basic concepts of network theory and their application in historical and archaeological research (with a focus on the study of Late Antiquity and Byzantium) as well as an introduction into software tools and practical network analysis. The aim of this one-day-long workshop is to enable students to critically evaluate the growing number of studies using network analysis as well as to apply these tools themselves in a well-reflected and productive way.

The seminar is free of charge and will be held in English. Enrollment is limited to 20. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance after the completion of the program.

Candidates should send by e-mail a short statement of purpose indicating the relevance of this program for their studies/career and providing information on their educational background and level of English.

The deadline for the applications is 19 April 2024.

Applications should be sent to [email protected]

"Sergide Bizantinologların bitmiş eserlerine değil, o süreci nasıl yaşadıklarına, yolda makale ve kitap gibi ürünlerini nasıl hazırladıklarına bakmaya çalıştık."

Anamed Library Talks continue on October 3 with Koray Durak, Nevra Necipoğlu, Tolga Uyar and Sema Doğan. The talk is entitled “Türkiye'de Bizans Çalışmaları: Yeni Araştırmalar, Farklı Eğilimler”.

"Türkiye'de Bizans Çalışmaları: Yeni Araştırmalar, Farklı Eğilimler" (İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları, 2022), edited by Koray Durak, Nevra Necipoğlu and Tolga Uyar, consists of the combining of the papers in an article format presented at the conference of the same name held at Boğaziçi University in 2016. This project, which aims to bring together all Byzantinologists within the borders of Turkey, to be a tool for the exchange of new ideas and approaches in a dialogue environment, and to encourage analysis and synthesis as well as the presentation of data, draws a picture of Byzantine studies in Turkey and it helps us see where Byzantinology is evolving at the beginning of the 21st century. In the conversation between the moderator Sema Doğan from Hacettepe University Department of Art History and the editors of the book, the course and problems of Byzantine studies will be discussed and solution suggestions will be offered.

The speech will be held via remote access.

Date: 3.10.2023

Time: 18:00-20:00

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Elizabeth Jeffreys, Bywater & Sotheby Professor of Byzantine & Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Oxford.

During her long career, she taught at notable universities worldwide, such as Ioannina, Sydney, and Melbourne. She was a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and an honorary fellow of St. Anne College, Oxford.

Her main interests were Byzantine and modern Greek language and literature, and her translations and studies on John Malalas (The Chronicle of Malalas, Melbourne, 1986) and Digenis Akritis (Digenis Akritis: The Grottaferrata and Escorial Versions, Cambridge, 1998) are pioneering works on the development of Byzantine Studies worldwide. She was also one of the editors of The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Studies (New York, 2009) alongside John Haldon and Robin Cormack.
