Future has always been a captivating topic but with the rise of the pandemic, it became even more popular. In the past two years, what technology promised has arrived much earlier than estimated. The borders between past, present, and future are now more blurred and ambiguous than ever. In this cycle, AAP will explore the potential of this ambiguity: How will architecture respond to this new condition? How will digital technologies that herald new themes such as Metaverse or mixed-reality environments shape the role of architecture in a world where materiality, gravity, and distance have new meanings?
As in the previous cycles, the AAP team will try to find alternative ways of approaching a prominent subject and develop it through research, design, and a prototype. While we delve into metaverse as promising grounds for architects, and other digital technologies such as AI, VR, and blockchain, AAP will work in collaboration with MEF University Extended Learning and Research Lab and other partner institutions from software engineering, neuropsychology, or level design. For the development of the prototype, AAP will be collaborating with the Zeugma Archaeological Project to investigate the potential of architecture in creating mixed-reality environments.

•Johnson Wax's Administration Building•
F.L. Wright later explained, “Anybody can build a typical building. I wanted to build the best office building in the world, and the only way to do that was to get the greatest architect in the world.”
••
The building, which opened in 1939 in Racine, Wisconsin, is celebrated as one of the top 25 buildings of the 20th century.

One of the first home-office inventions in history “Cabinet Bed”.
Invented by Sarah E. Goode, 1885.
In 2020-2021 cycle, AAP will focus on work environments. Continuing with the theme “Small Scale Decent Change”, the program will investigate how small scale design can contribute to the places we work. Small scale has always been a strong tool to generate solutions for the workplace, not only to integrate office facility to our homes but also to customise outsize work environments. It was 1885 when Sarah Goode designed a cabinet bed, which becomes a writing desk to transform a part of the house into office space when necessary. Considering new technologies, social change, the economic crisis which is multiplied by Pandemics, AAP will investigate how small scale design once again could be explored for new possibilities workplace requires.

When there is a radical shift in society or a groundbreaking innovation in technology, the workplace is among the first to be redesigned. From giant factories to translucent towers, segregated cubicles to cool venues for co-working, there has been a wide variety of solutions in the last centuries, triggered by either social thresholds or technological breakthroughs.
Unlike living spaces, the workplace has evolved radically throughout history. However, emerging ideas for new working environments are hardly long-term solutions. Open-plan office, aspired mostly by employers, was blamed to decrease the performance of employees. Cubicles that are revisited today for COVID-safe offices were mostly criticised in the last decade, right after they were boomed as a simple solution to create personal space in open-plan offices. Co-working venues that had been supported by big investors in the last decade, start to expire as the increasing common expense annoys the users. Remote working which was a trending topic at the beginning of this century with the spread of the world wide web has to be reconfigured with the effect of Pandemics since it is obligatory rather than a choice. Like innovations, economic crisis, or social transformation, Pandemic becomes another threshold that prompts new ideas in the workspace.

AAP program is composed of four semesters. Each semester is devoted to a particular phase of the research by design project. The first semester is research. The second semester is reserved for prototyping. The third semester is devoted to the realization of the project: making. Three studio projects form a project cycle followed by the writing of the thesis.

In Alternative Architectural Practices program, we develop methods for imagining and building new paths to discover small scale architecture. In partnership with companies from the construction industry of Istanbul, the program aims to use the potential of the industry that has long been engaged with the global real estate market, as a tool to design and make new architectures/structures for the emerging conditions of our world.
