Most learners think would is just the past of will. It isn’t.

In this lesson, you’ll learn 4 of its most common uses:
✔️ Polite requests
✔️ Imaginary situations
✔️ Repeated actions in the past
✔️ “I would if I could”

Master the small words, and the big conversations become easier.

Many English learners think would rather and would prefer mean different things.

They don’t.

They both express a preference—the difference is how we use them.

✅ Would rather + base verb
• I’d rather stay home.
• She’d rather walk than drive.

✅ Would prefer + noun / to + verb
• I’d prefer coffee.
• I’d prefer to stay home.

❌ Common mistakes:
• I’d rather to stay home.
• I’d prefer stay home.

✔️ Correct:
• I’d rather stay home.
• I’d prefer to stay home.

Remember: the meaning is the same—the structure is different.

Have you ever heard someone say, “You talked me into it” or “You talked me out of it”?
They sound similar, but they have opposite meanings.
✅ Talk someone into (doing something) = convince someone to do something.
My friend talked me into joining the gym.
❌ Talk someone out of (doing something) = convince someone not to do something.
My mom talked me out of quitting my job.
✨ A simple way to remember:
Into = Do it
Out of = Don’t do it
