It was said that this is the cave where Ibn Khaldun wrote his famous book, Al-Muqaddimah.

Dr. Benaouda Bensaid, who is my teacher in Sociology and taught us from the Muqaddimah visited the cave.

Al-Muqaddimah is one of the greatest books ever written on social sciences, cultural history, economics and much more. Many westerners and Muslim scholars till this day quote from Ibn Khaldun due to the importance of the book.

Ibn Khaldun secluded himself in this town of Tiaret in Algeria after keeping himself away from political life. Ibn Khaldun came from a high class Andalusian family who was well known within the political life of Al-Andalus before emigrating to Tunis after the fall of Seville.

New Book!

The Gems of Al Andalus page will start a new initiative in posting newly published books about al-Andalus or from Andalusian authors of the past!

Due to al-Andalus being one one leading places in culture and knowledge of its time, the books will vary in topics.

A new book has been published recently from the top early scholars of Hadith of al-Andalus, Ibn Waddah al-Qurtubi.

It was said that Imam Ibn Waddah and Baqi ibn Khalad were the founders of the school of hadith in al-Andalus.

This book is about the narrators that Imam Ibn Waddah took from in hadith. It is very useful for a student of hadith and a researcher.

Understanding the Muqaddimah by ibn Khaldun is not easy. Many teachers and researchers consider this work to be one of the hardest to read due to its high Arabic and understanding ibn Khaldun’s concepts.

Our teacher in Sociology, Dr. Benaouda Bensaid from Algeria suggested me to read and understand the summary of the Muqadimah by Dr. Abdul Muhsin al-’Usaymi before actually diving deep into the Muqaddimah itself. Reason being so I can be able to grasp the core ideas from Ibn Khaldun first.

We are also currently studying this book at our university, Sabahattin Zaim in Istanbul.

Ahmed Deedat mentioned a quote in his book, Arabs and Israel-Conflict or Conciliation that the Jews under Muslim rule in al-Andalus reached a point where they considered themselves under their own golden age:

Ramadan in al-Andalus Part 2

Giving out charity was widely practiced in al-Andalus by the common Andalusian and the Muslim rulers. Charity would be handed out especially during the end of Ramadan and times of hardship such as during a famine.

Ibn Hayyan mentioned in his famous book on Andalusian history, al-Muqtabis fi Tarikh al-Andalus, that the Caliph Hakam II led a ceremony of one of these distributions of charity in which slaves went around with open bags full of money giving out to people.

Ramadan in al-Andalus

In the great mosque (Jami al-Kabir) of the city of Cordoba, it was known during the month of Ramadan that it remained open all night and the amount of oil to light the lanterns cost half the annual amount just in the month of Ramdan alone. During Layla al-Qadr, large amounts of perfume were burned on this special occasion.

Imam al-Maqari mentioned in his book Nafh al-Tib that in the great mosque there were 280 chandeliers. The number of lanterns was 8,425 and some have said it could have been 10,805!

I recently read an article send by my friend Ali Al-Andalusi that talks about the Muslim community in Spain. Many Spaniards are becoming Muslim and some are even finding out they have Morisco ancestry!

“Muslim Community in Spain

According to official records, the Muslim population in Spain has multiplied tenfold over the past three decades, surpassing 2.5 million individuals. Non-official estimates suggest that the number of Muslims in the country may be closer to 3 million. Within this diverse community, 40 percent are Spanish converts, while the remaining 60 percent are immigrants, primarily from Morocco. However, other nationalities such as Pakistani and Senegalese also contribute to the vibrant Muslim presence in cities like Barcelona, Valencia, and Logrono.”
