A Message from Doshu

COVID-19 is spreading all around the world. I pray for the prompt recovery of all those who have been affected by it, and I would also like to express my sincere condolences to the families of all who have passed away.

In these times when COVID-19 is spreading around the world, as a measure to avoid infection various things and events are being reduced or cancelled, and our society feels as though dark clouds are hanging over us.

Regarding Aikido, events are being cancelled in all the regions, and most people cannot even keep practicing because of the closing of their training places. Although unavoidable, it is incredibly unfortunate.

“The circular movement embodies Aikido’s spirit, the spirit of harmony”. I believe this thought is the most important for us as humans. Right now, especially at this time, we must value the spirit of harmony and not lose our moral sense to fear of the virus. Preventing the spread of infection and self-protection is important. At the same time, are people not becoming exhausted from the fear the current situation is causing? Are we not losing our human thoughtfulness, our kindness? It feels like our state of mind is being tested by this virus.

We must fight this fear without losing our sense of morality and committing any kind of discrimination towards others, being calm and affable.

Until the time that this infection ends, and we can go back to our daily Aikido practice, I pray for all of us not to forget the “spirit of harmony”, and to keep walking the same path together.

The International Aikido Federation (IAF) has been in close contact with the Aikikai World Headquarters monitoring the Covid-19 situation in Japan and the rest of the world in order to decide whether to host the International Aikido Summit as scheduled or not in Sep/Oct 2020. We also took into reference the situation of the Games of the # # Olympiad in Tokyo that last week was rescheduled to a date beyond 2020, but no later than summer 2021. Furthermore, we have inquired select IAF member federations from different continents on their opinions.

Based on the above, IAF held an online Directing Committee meeting last Wednesday the 25th of March and we agreed to recommend a postponement of the International Aikido Summit to Doshu, which he consented. IAF's decision to postpone the Summit to 2021 and beyond has been taken in close consultation with Doshu and the Aikikai.

On behalf of IAF, Aikikai will enter into negotiations with the related parties in Japan to cancel many of the facility and service arrangements that had been made. We will await the announcement of the rescheduling of the Tokyo Olympics in order to restart the future planning for our International Aikido Summit in 2021. We will keep you posted with administrative (some statute related requirements) and other information as soon as it becomes available.

Many of our IAF member dojos are closed to safeguard the health of our Aikido practitioners and the communities. We would like to recommend physical distance to safeguard our health and that of the community, but maintain online social unity (not social distance) to keep our flame of Aikido training. IAF hopes to use our website and social media to keep the connection with all of you during this difficult time. Please be safe and maintain your health and hope to see you in 2021, if not sooner.

This is a time, more than ever, to be thankful for those who dedicated their lives to helping us better ours. We share in the aikido community's great loss 16 years ago, and are grateful for fond memories and deep gratitude to Kanai Sensei.
