TALK: "The American West and the Aporia of Hospitality in HBO’s Westworld"
by Dr. Andrew Ploeg (CCI)

ABSTRACT:
In 1893, historian Frederick Jackson Turner posited the American West as a place of transformation and, thus, as the defining force in American history. While Turner’s “Frontier Thesis” has been roundly criticized over the years, its subject nevertheless remains critical to a robust understanding of America and American identity. HBO’s television series Westworld (2016) is one of the most recent attempts to explore this seminal American symbol. The series focuses on a Wild-West- themed amusement park in which visitors have the opportunity to fulfill their frontier fantasies. The massive, futuristic park is populated by lifelike, artificially-intelligent androids, termed “hosts,” that exist to satisfy even the most sadistic desires of their human “guests.” Due to their programming, the “hosts” are unable to kill the “guests” and their memories are purged every night so that they cannot recall the countless atrocities perpetrated against them. This ethically complex relationship raises questions regarding the aporia of hospitality. Taking up some of these questions, I maintain that Westworld reflects the paradoxical nature of the American West through its depiction of this double bind.
