GRE INSIGHTS FROM OUR LEAD TUTOR
Firstly a bit about myself. I registered for it roughly a week before the examination date and Alhumdulillah got a 170 in Verbal, 169 in Quant, and a 5 in AW.
So here are my two cents on the GRE and the optimal way to prepare for it.
It's nothing new. If you have completed a Bachelor's, you probably know every single concept. The Quant section is basically high-school math and should be a breeze for those who didn't completely give up math after high school. For the rest, you just need a bit of revision.
The Verbal section might be a bit tough for us, as English isn't our mother language. However, note this: they aren't trying to catch you out by using the most difficult words in the dictionary If you have a regular reading habit, you SHOULD know all these words anyway. Also, if you are aiming for an academic career, have read scientific papers etc., comprehension should be relatively easy.
So, what's the catch? For the Quant section, it's the time limit. You have to be fast AND accurate. For the verbal section, it's because we haven't trained our verbal reasoning skills (this is particularly an issue with STEM majors, but everyone suffers from it).
To-Do List for Preparation
Start off by taking one of the sample exams on the ETS site. Identify your areas of weakness.
Develop heuristics and short-cuts (particularly important for Quant). If it’s taking you several minutes, you are probably doing it wrong.
Use the official prep book, and if you have enough time, go through every exercise. Imo, the official book is better than every book in the market.
So where does Orca come in? Not everyone has the time to develop their own short-cuts or heuristics through trial and error. Those in the humanities will need to revise high school math, while STEM majors may struggle through long passages.
At ORCA, we create a personalized plan focusing on your weaknesses (based on the ETS sample), take you through the tracks, identify the shortcuts which work for you, and most importantly, bring forth those latent skills which you need for a perfect score.
