Increasing intra-African trade: Can the African Continental Free Trade Area be the game changer? | AOSIS scholarly books 18/02/2026

The WTO Chair at Essect and the WTO Chair at North West University in South Africa are delighted to announce the publication of their book:

Increasing Intra-African Trade: Can the AFCFTA be the game changer?

The book poses a fundamental question: Can the AfCFTA be the game changer in Africa’s quest to unlock its considerable intra-continental trade potential? It addresses this question by
illuminating the complexities of trading on the continent and the transformative potential of the AfCFTA to strengthen economic and trade relationships between African countries.

It also shows, with meticulous precision, how to identify untapped export opportunities in a selection of African countries by applying the refined TRADE-DSM (Decision Support Model) methodology, combined with the product space approach. Moreover, it outlines strategies to bolster trade through the crucial pillars of export diversification and industrialisation.

With its evidence-based approach and actionable
recommendations that align with the AfCFTA’s goals, the book serves as a critical resource for policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders committed to seeing Africa realise its intra-
continental trade potential.

Other distinguished trade experts who contributed chapters to the book are Prof Lorainne Ferreira, Prof Sonia Ben Kheder, Dr Marie-Luce Kühn, Dr Mehdi Ben Slimane, Dr Amal Medini, Dr Jean Luc Namegabe Mastaki, Dr Caitlin Carrico and Ali
Parry.
