🎤 The talk will explore how Palestinian songs, moving from stadiums to clubs and protests, carry memory and solidarity while also reflecting tensions around who can be heard and seen in Berlin’s cultural scene.

📢 Résumé : MECAM Rencontre Ibn Khaldoun

📍Vendredi dernier, le 8 mai, nous avons eu le plaisir d'organiser la deuxième Rencontre Ibn Khaldoun de l'année : une projection du film Sh'hili, suivie d'un échange avec le réalisateur et géographe Habib Ayeb, ainsi que Nessim Znaien, professeur à l'Université de Marbourg et membre du Conseil exécutif du MECAM. La thématique du film - et de la discussion qui a suivi - ne pourrait être plus actuelle : Tourné entre la France, l’Italie, la Tunisie et le Maroc, Sh'hili se veut une contribution à une résistance collective face aux conséquences écologiques, sociales et politiques du changement climatique.

📣Retour en images sur le MECAM SPECTRUM – EVENT WEEK : Unruly Voices, Images, and Bodies: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Maghreb, qui s’est tenue au MECAM les 14, 15 et 16 avril 2026.

📍L’Event Week est Organisée conjointement par les MECAM fellows de la cohorte 2025–2026, tous affiliés à l’Université de Tunis et coordonnée par Mme Faten Bouchrara (Coordinatrice des MECAM fellows).

📍Nous adressons nos sincères remerciements à l’ensemble des intervenant.e.s, dont les contributions ont permis d’explorer avec finesse la notion de “unruly” (indocile, insoumis) comme grille de lecture des dynamiques de savoir, de culture et de pouvoir dans le Maghreb.

📍Nos remerciements vont également aux président·e·s de séance pour la qualité de leur modération, la pertinence de leurs analyses et leur accompagnement rigoureux des échanges.

📣MECAM long-term fellow Massensen Cherbi (https://mecam.tn/massensen-cherbi-irf-iii/?lang=en) is participating in the study days “Ce qui (dé)fait les élites. Algérie / Tunisie” organized by CRASC (Oran) and IRMC (Tunis).
🎤 He presents in Panel 2 on post-independence political elites, focusing on the Algerian Constituent Assembly (1962–1963).
This event explores how elites are formed, transformed, and challenged in the Maghreb across different historical moments.

📍 Would you like to join us for a movie? We are thrilled to present the film “Sh’hili” (2024), followed by a discussion with geographer, professor emeritus, and well-known filmmaker Habib Ayeb and Nessim Znaien, Professor at Marburg University and member of MECAM’s Executive Council. The discussion will be held in French and may continue over a small reception.

🔹MECAM Rencontre Ibn Khaldun

📣La semaine dernière, le 16 avril, nous avons organisé la première Rencontre Ibn Khaldoun de l'année : une projection du film "El Baab" / "La Porte" (1980), suivie d'une discussion intitulée "Désaliéner l'institution pour désaliéner le malade : l'expérience en psychothérapie institutionnelle à El Razi".

📍L'événement, réunissant le Dr Essedik Jeddi, la Pr Raja Labbane et la Dr Saniya Taher, a mis en lumière le travail pionnier du Dr Jeddi dans le domaine de la psychiatrie en Tunisie après l'indépendance. Le public a ainsi été invité à engager un dialogue autour de son intervention radicale face à l'héritage de la psychiatrie coloniale, notamment à travers son action à l'hôpital El Razi dans les années 1970-1980, où il en a réformé la structure et mis en place la psychothérapie institutionnelle.

📍Nous tenons tout particulièrement à remercier notre MECAM Fellow Saniya Taher pour son initiative et les efforts qu'elle a déployés dans l'organisation de cet événement, ainsi que le Dr Jeddi et la Pr Raja Labbane pour avoir accepté de participer à cette discussion.

📢 Recap: MECAM Traveling Academy in Gabès

📣Last week, from 31 March to 2 April, we gathered in Gabès for the MECAM Traveling Academy on Mysticism and the City: Temporality, Spatiality, Culture, and Society. Convened by Cyrine Kortas (MECAM long-term fellow/ University of Gabès) and organized by Diana Abbani ( MECAM/ Forum Transregionale Studien), the Academy brought together speakers from Gabès, Tunis, Berlin, and elsewhere.

💬 Focusing on how mystical traditions — including, but not limited to, Sufism — shape urban life in the Maghreb and beyond, discussions highlighted mysticism as a resource for memory, creativity, and solidarity, as well as a field of conflict, negotiation, and city-making.

🌟 We would like to thank all the speakers and participants for contributing to a rich and thoughtful debate. A special thanks goes to the Higher Institute of Languages (ISLG), University of Gabès, for generously hosting and supporting the event.
