The first barrier to training rural women in Tunisia is the road
Ask why women in rural Tunisia do not take up vocational training and the expected answer is about motivation, or about information not reaching them. Nine consultations carried out by SHE-GROWS in the governorates of Jendouba and Béja point somewhere else entirely. The problem is getting there.
Almost every representative of agricultural institutions, rural women’s associations and training centres named transport as the single biggest obstacle. Many women have no vehicle of their own and cannot meet the cost of travelling to centres far from their villages. As the representative of the North West region’s training centre put it, even where good training exists, the women who need it most cannot reach it.
That finding changes the project in practical terms. SHE-GROWS trains women in rural Tunisia in hydroponic growing and cooperative enterprise, and the lesson is clear enough: the courses have to move towards the communities, not the other way round.
