In 2001, CARE published a ground-breaking children’s magazine, the first publication with a truly national reach in the Tetum language, a language that unifies the linguistically diverse Timorese population, supporting a sense of national identity and culture, critical in nation-building, immediately after winning independence. More than 20 years after its inception, Lafaek continues to make significant and relevant contributions to Timor-Leste’s development as a vibrant and creative force promoting learning and communication under a Timorese team of managers, writers, artists, layout specialists, drivers, and field officers. To date, donor funding has supported Lafaek’s operations, but with current trends in reducing official development assistance for Timor-Leste, this is unlikely to be a reliable option for the future. To strengthen the long-term sustainability of Lafaek, CARE aims to transition this flagship project into a social enterprise.
