Bele Kria Sewing Centre -

Background:
I first travelled to Timor Leste in 2004, spending some time living alongside Timorese women. Among many things I observed, I was struck with strong concerns regarding the difficulties faced by women in managing their menstrual hygiene. During 2008- 2009, I researched options that would be suitable for a nation such as Timor Leste. By 2010 we were ready with

designs, fabric and ideas to begin creating modern cloth pads (MCP’s) here in Timor Leste to distribute to women across the nation. I proceeded to open a sewing room in 2011 and taught a small handful of women to make MCPs (Menstural Cloth Pads). The sewing room (Belekria) has also provided a need for the local community making repairs and alterations to clothing. Currently Belekria produces modern cloth pads, nappy covers, school uniforms, simple school shoulder bags, general clothing and also trains 6-8 women each year with basic sewing skills. The sewing room was begun solely for the production of MCPs to provide an effective menstrual product and attempt to alleviate the specific difficulties faced by Timorese women during their menstruation.
