Crack The 12 Note Code!
How visual knowledge of the 12 notes on the piano serves as the ultimate reference guide to the inner workings of your voice!
Knowing the 12 individual piano notes is the ultimate visual representation of your voice because it provides a clear, systematic, and tangible way to understand and navigate your vocal range.
Therefore, in this post, I'm sharing some easy exercises that'll help you use the piano as your sole point of reference.
If you're a beginner or advanced singer who hasn't explored this yet, think of the piano keys as a visual map for every note you'll ever need to sing!
You don't need to read music for this, and the completion of these exercises will ensure the following guaranteed benefits…
- 🔍 Visual Clarity: The piano keys offer a straightforward, organized layout of all the musical notes, making it easy to see and understand the relationships between them.
- 🎯 Pitch Accuracy: By correlating vocal pitches to piano notes, singers can develop precise pitch accuracy, ensuring they hit the correct notes while singing.
- 🌈 Range Mapping: The 12 notes within an octave repeat across the piano, helping singers map out their vocal range and identify their lowest and highest notes with ease.
- 👂 Ear Training: Practicing with piano notes enhances a singer’s ability to recognize pitches by ear, a crucial skill for staying in tune and harmonizing.
- 💪 Muscle Memory: Regularly singing along with piano notes helps develop muscle memory in the vocal cords, leading to more consistent and reliable vocal performances
- 🎵 Scales and Intervals: The piano provides a clear visual guide for learning scales, intervals, and other musical concepts, aiding in the understanding of how these elements fit into vocal practice.
- 🎼 Versatility: The piano's ability to produce both melody and harmony makes it an invaluable tool for singers to practice both solo pieces and ensemble work.
- 🚀 Confidence Building: Familiarity with the piano’s visual and auditory feedback can boost a singer’s confidence, knowing they have a reliable reference point for their practice and performances.
- 📚 Accessible Learning: Unlike some other instruments, the piano’s design makes it easy for beginners to grasp musical concepts quickly, without needing advanced skills in playing or reading music.
- 🌟 Holistic Understanding: Integrating piano knowledge into vocal training provides a holistic understanding of music theory and performance, bridging the gap between instrumental and vocal music.
- 🎹 Learn these 12 Notes on the Piano!
Although the full piano has 88 keys you only need to learn 12 of them.
As you can see on pages 2 and 3 of this post the system of notes just repeats itself over again through the “octaves” of C1 at the lowest end all the way up to C8 at the very top.
- 🎵 Try this exercise below…
First try learning just the white keys from C3 to the B3 in the next octave known as the “natural notes”.
Next, move on to learning the 5 black notes within in the same region which are known as either sharp or flat notes, (for this example I will be referring to them as flat notes).
- 🎶 Now try this…
As an exercise practice singing just the white notes from C to C in the next octave.
Next, sing the black notes only from D flat to B flat.
When you are feeling confident try singing the whole 12 notes in sequence (known as the chromatic scale)
Tip: As you do this, try singing or saying the letters of each piano key on the pitch of the note. Keep repeating until you are able to look at the keyboard and correctly label each individual note from memory.
Remember! At this stage it’s not a note pitching exercise, so please don’t be put off if your pitching is not perfectly aligned with the notes yet! It’s purely an exercise for you to become familiar with the notes on the keyboard so that you have an exact visual reference of the sounds that you are producing internally!
By doing so you will have the foundation for the next step where I will give you information and tips to train your ears and the structure of vocal harmony!
