~ number bonds

based on a lesson observed at
Anglo Singapore International School
(Campus Korat)

This is one key idea for early numeracy.

Teacher Paul starts by presenting the anchor task - put six buttons into two groups. And later have them turn and talk about what they got before whole class sharing.

The teacher can then record each of the responses on a separate number bond frame.

This can later be used to challenge advanced learners - to work systematically to generate all possibilities and to see the relationship between the number of possibilities with the number. With 6, there seven combinations if 0 and 6 vs 6 and 0 are considered different.

After this they separate into two groups for guided practice - Teacher Paul with one group and the TA with the advanced group. Teacher Paul models doing number bonds for 7 using buttons. And later send them off to try the same for 8, 9 and 10.

The advanced group do the same for breaking seven up into three parts. And then send them off to try the same for 8, 9 and 10.

Early finishers can work on the challenge tasks - how many ways to do number bonds for 8, for instance.

I introduced the idea of multi-day investigation to Teacher Paul.

Teacher Paul odentifies the use of manipulative s and his TA identifies interactive nature of the learning as strengths of the lesson.
