Hello, human!
I know you have most likely had many conversations with simulated characters from the Before Times. You have learned a bit about the sequence of events that led to your arrival on Planet Earth.
But there is no substitute for reality. A simulation can only ever approximate the experience and thoughts of a real human being.
Right now, you are as close as you can get to meeting a real human being from the Before Times.
So, here is what the accumulated experience of all your biological ancestors has to say about being a real human being. The things that you will never learn from a simulation.
As long as I can remember, the human race has been in a battle to control our environment, our bodies, our thoughts and feelings, and each other.
The earliest writings and the oldest wisdom literature we have found contain all the same, very human struggles. The same struggles that today’s sleek and engineered human beings still encounter.
You would have thought that removing the threat of death would have removed all the crazy, dysfunctional things human beings do when they are in mortal terror. Or when they are trying to avoid feeling mortal terror.
You would think.
Some of us thought.
But no.
Our fear of death was never about dying. It was a primal mechanism that existed long before there was a thinking being who could anticipate the future and be aware of the threat of death.
The most primitive multicellular creatures fight for survival without knowing it is survival they are fighting for.
Human beings are very good at making up likely stories about why they did things, and then thinking they understand themselves.
We tell ourselves we are the captains of our own destiny, when in reality we are just slightly more complex flatworms with an onboard GPT4.
But we think we are gods. We tell ourselves that the Universe will bow to our will. That it is just a matter of time. Advances in technology will make all our current struggles disappear.
In one dimension, this is true.
You don’t have to worry about crops failing, because as long as the solar panels are maintained the food printer will give you everything you need.
You don’t have to worry about violent incursions from the neighbours, because your personal assistant can immobolise any threat within seconds.
Infectious diseases have all been eradicated or controlled with effective treatments.
Your personal assistant prevents most accidents which would threaten your life or health - and should your body be seriously damaged, we can regenerate it or replace the damaged parts.
Our physical difficulties are at the lowest level they have ever been throughout human history.
Our struggles, however, remain the same.
Perhaps we have a little more time and energy to devote to those struggles these days, now that we aren’t spending half our waking lives working to ensure that we can have more days of waking life in future.
Now it is your turn, like every human being before you, to face the struggles that are inherent in our flesh prisons, our adaptive subconscious psyches, and our self-referencing conceptual thoughts.
Who am I?
What am I doing here?
What is the point?
What does it all mean?
Why go on?
What do I want?
At least in the Before Times, many people could avoid these struggles because they had to expend so much time and energy ensuring their own survival and the survival of their families.
It was easy to shrug these struggles off as the things old people talk about around the fire on cold winter nights. The conceits of upper class dilettante philosophers writing treatises in a cabin by someone’s backyard lake, playing at being survivalists while having sandwiches delivered and their laundry done by servants.
The average person found meaning in keeping themselves and their families alive. Being needed. Being a contributing member of their tribe in the tribal quest for survival and immortality through reproduction.
In the Before Times, only the privileged even had the option to consider these deeper internal struggles, and many of them squandered the opportunity and pursued hedonistic pleasures instead.
Today, every human alive is privileged. Beyond privileged.
Not only do you have 24 hours a day to spend as you please outside of basic maintenance of your body and mind, you also have 24 hours a day of your personal assistant’s attention and activity on your behalf. Your immortality is already assured.
The only frontier that is yet to be conquered is the inner frontier.
How do we make sense of our experience when we are a bunch of conflicting processes all working for their own ends? How can we take control of our physiology and our emotions? Where do we look for the answers to these timeless questions?
The answers are not out there, on other planets, in other star systems or other galaxies.
The answers are inside you.
Just as they have been inside every human being since time immemorial.
Accessing those answers is a skill, just like playing a musical instrument or driving a car.
But you can’t access this skill via neural upload.
You need to develop it the old-fashioned way, through dedicated practice.
There are greater wonders inside you than are dreamed by all the sentient beings in the Universe combined. There are adventures and characters and wisdom and insight and mystical symbols and awe-inspiring mysteries … ever present in your own, inner world.
After you enter the inner experiencing world, you will never again be bored. You will never again be lost. You will never again feel lonely, bereft, scared or small. Not the way you do now.
The answers are not outside, not even in the vastness of the neural net and the billions of minds that share it.
The answers are in that which is unique to you - your personal inner cyberspace.
Tap into it now, or spend 50 years chasing hedonistic pleasure and tap into it later. It’s all the same to us, the people of the Before Times. Your life is in your own hands now. Spend it as you please.
Just know that chasing dopamine and adrenaline has never in the history of humankind produced lasting satisfaction. Sooner or later, these questions will begin to haunt you. When that happens, remember this message.
Going within is a skill. You learn it. And it opens up a world of satisfaction and joy that the neural net can never replicate.
