LOCAL FOOD 4 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP. First night back home in my own bed after a short holiday, I had a dream that we started a NEW CAMPAIGN. Join me in thinking that the Local Food movement and awareness of Food Citizenship is the best springboard toward Global Citizenship.
Why we need Global Citizenship? In the process towards the UN SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE it becomes clear (again) that nations-states have such limited interests that they won't appropriately give way to social transformation. For example the proposal to appoint a Special UN ENVOY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS has now been given lower priority than civili society enthusiastically urgend member states to go for. The framework of the UN depends on - ultimately - the monopoly of UN member-states. These are governments that not seldom are civilil society unfriendly. So. we need a new perspective to emphasize the urgent need to assure the wellbeing of FUTURE GENERATIONS: acting together as global citizens! for the common good. Food as a commons.
Global citizenship is not something abstract or outlandish, GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP CAN FIRMLY BE ROOTED and is embedded in THE LOCAL FOOD MOVEMENT.

One of the most promising expected outcomes of the SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE 2024 is a range of initiatives due to emerge from the FUTURE GENERATIONS EXCHANGES.
Youth and the Elderly are both closest to the quality of total detatchment from existing frameworks typical for the state of "being unborn". That is a crucial source of creativity, change-making and social innovation, constituting intergenerational dialogue and collaboration. Ambassador Kobsak Chutikul, Moderator (thanks for sharing the pictures) proposes a FUTURE GENERATIONS DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE based in Thailand and reaching out to ASEAN and the Asia Pacific Region.
The urgent need to appoint a Special UN Envoy for Future Generations has been articulated for decades by the World Future Councild (WFC) based in Hamburg, Germany. One of the WFC Councillors and also the Co-Chair of the Earth Trusteeship Working Group, Neshan Gunasekera, Sri Lanka, will be in Bangkok this 27th August.
Assoc. Prof. Emilie Gaillard, expert in "future generations and legal transitions" and co-founder of the Chaire Normansie pour la Paix, French co-sponsor of the Pacific Island Students Fighting against Climate Change will attend the Summit of the Future in New York; as will Jan Van De Venis, Netherlands Human Rights lawyer, Deputy Chair of the global network of institues for future generations with 20 members worldwide.
A big thank you to Ambassador Kobsak, Emilie and resource persons Khun Chamsai of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Khun Suchada Kulawat, Senior UN analyst, Jeta Jiranuntarat of Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) and Christian Mortelliti of United Nations ESCAP.
