Makha Bucha Day, also known as Magha Puja, is one of the most significant observances in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. This public holiday in Thailand is celebrated annually on the full moon day of the third lunar month, which typically falls in February or March.
On this day, Buddhists in Thailand and around the world undertake various meritorious activities. These include visiting temples for merit-making, giving alms, meditating, and participating in candlelight processions. Through these acts, devotees seek to purify their minds, cultivate virtue,and pay homage to the Buddha's teachings.
Another critical tradition of Makha Bucha Day is the 'Wien Thien' or candle procession. Participants light candles, incense, and flowers, and circumambulate the temple's main shrine three times. Each round symbolizes the Three Jewels or Triple Gem: The Buddha, The Dhamma (Buddha's teachings), and The Sangha (Buddhist community).
Makha Bucha Day is a day of reflection, purification, and reaffirmation of commitment to the Buddha's teachings. It reinforces the importance of practicing mindfulness, generosity, and compassion in daily life, encapsulating the very essence of Buddhism.

วันมาฆบูชา หรือมาฆปูชา เป็นหนึ่งในวันสำคัญในการประกอบพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาของชาวพุทธมหานิกาย ซึ่งเป็นวันหยุดราชการในประเทศไทย และเฉลิมฉลองทุกปีในวันพระจันทร์เต็มดวงของเดือนที่สาม ในปฏิทินจันทรคติ ซึ่งโดยทั่วไปจะตกในเดือน กุมภาพันธ์ หรือมีนาคม
ในวันนี้, ชาวไทยพุทธ และชาวพุทธทั่วโลก ได้ดำเนินกิจกรรม อาทิ การฏิบัติธรรม ซึ่งรวมถึงการเข้าวัดทำบุญ, การทำบุญบริจาค, การทำสมาธิ, และการเวียนเทียน เหล่านี้เป็นการสะท้อนถึงการที่ผู้ศรัทธา ประคองศีลธรรม และทำจิตใจให้บริสุทธิ์ ตลอดจนลำลึกถึง และนอบน้อมในคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้า
ประเพณีสำคัญอีกหนึ่งอย่างในวันมาฆบูชา คือ เวียนเทียน ผู้เข้าร่วมจะจุดเทียน ธูป และดอกไม้ แล้วเดินวนรอบอุโบสถสามรอบ แต่ละรอบจะระลึกถึงสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์สามประการ คือ พระรัตนตรัย อันประกอบด้วย พระพุทธ, พระธรรม (การสอนของพระพุทธ), และพระสังฆ์ (สาวกของพระพุทธ)
