“ไหว้/wâai” is a traditional action that Thai people use for greeting, farewell, begging, thank, and apologize. It is also a symbol for paying respect. We generally do “wâai” to people with higher social status. For example, monk, parent, boss, teacher and older people etc. Base on original Thai tradition, there are many level of “wâai”.

You want to learn Thai language; you’re searching for Thai phrases to remember so you can start talking with Thai people… Hold on! If you really want to speak Thai. There’re some basic concept of Thai language I think it’s good to know. So you can pronounce Thai words the right way.

1. Thai is a tonal language; this means similar words
pronounced with different tone might have different
meaning. Chinese has this similar concept.

2. Thai has short and long vowels; when you pronounce
some word longer or shorter than it would be; its
meaning might be changed.

3. Some Thai consonant (sound) does not exist in
English (or other language). For example, “ง/ng”,
“ป/bp” and “ต/dt”.

Q: What will happen if I miss theses concept?

A: You’ll speak Thai with “faràng”’s accent.

Q: Is that a bad thing?

A: No, It’s OK and cute to speak Thai with “faràng” accent. Thai people will try to understand you (with a level of effort, depend on your accent.) .

But if you want to go with the flow while talking to Thai people or you want to speak Thai like you are a Thai, you can study the concept of Thai pronunciation here and then start practicing ( ^ ^ ). Otherwise, a Thai phrasebook with sign language is just fine.

Note: Thais call Caucasian or people from western countries “faràng” 🍏🍏🍏.
